For you naysayers I also spent almost 1000 hours in my fish house this year as well. Can you guys do some fancy math for me being I clearly cant do that on my own…
My family loves to fish so these numbers really aren’t that hard to hit.

I am having a hard time trying to figure out how many beers that would be.

Didn’t know you were a guide and left the motor running all day. That is some die hard boating. At 80 trips a year that is still 10.6 hours a day to hit 850 hours.
That is hard core.

I fished 4 days this week already with my kids. I’ll have close to 20 days on the water before walleye opener. Fishing is all my lil boy wants to do and it’s hard to tell him no.
No wonder the people that actually fish and have a lot to share no longer waste their time here.
Not trying to set you off again, but this part of your previous post seems to contradict that you are even posting here…no/yes?

Sure Joe, blame it on your son!
Biggest problem with my motor is it doesn’t put me on fish.

exactly. I’m just trying to wrap my head around how his post was “thoughtful or helpful” in the first place. The intent of the whole thing was to be honest about the junk motors not brag about good ones.
This thread from the beginning had bad argumentative voodoo on it. My apologies.
If anyone is able to wave some black magic wand potion crap around that’d be great thanks.

Be careful what you wish for, IDO may get crazy with their “poof gun” and blast everything in sight. (inside joke).

Help for you, and the rest of us is on the way…

I guess I thought it was helpful. The post topic was to be honest about your motors.
I think we need some more Mille Lacs netting posts so everyone can get their anger out. Who needs a Pepsi! Geeesh!
Regardless of brand, the majority of issues I have had with my black or grey motors of various sizes have been gas related. I had preventative maintenance done at a shop once and they did not replace the lower unit correctly. I certainly don’t blame the manufacturer for that.
At this point in my life, my biggest problem is that I don’t get to use them enough.

I can be honest about my motor too. Its been excellent but I don’t out on 27000 hrs per year.
Don’t take it personally JS. It was all in fun anyway at least on my part. Glad you and your boy spend a ton of time fishing. That’s priceless good motor or junk one. I have 3 boys and don’t get out near enough. This year that will change.

No need to. Negative Nancy must have took his garmin fishing with him.
I had 680 put on in 2 years. No issues.

But you started your first post on this thread with:
Sorry. I’m no help. I’ve put 1000’s of hours on my motors and being they were all tillers, close to a 1000 a year. Zero dollars spent on repairs… ever. My motors have all been 5-20 yrs old as well.
Well, more fixes that lead to more problems for my big gal. Thought I had er licked and brought down to the launch and try out with some back pressure and thing is still funk a dunk.
Drank more than a few beers last night to soothe the pain

Dang, hopefully you get it figured out soon.
Reed broke and went thru the bottom cylinder on my 25hp.During teardown and insspection I broke the bottom bolt for the exhaust cover off in the block.Suprisingly the cylinder and head wernt badly damaged, but my attempts to get the bolt out failed and made it even worse.Ended up having to pull the powerhead and bring to my mechanic/engineer who then rigged a plate and tapped two bolts into the block in place of the destroyed bolt which he said would have came out in a couple minutes if I hadnt made things worse. So all new gaskets plus a 30hp carb and intake and Im ready for reinstall.Well when I pulled the powerhead the water tube pulled out of the waterpump and when I put it back in the pump it pushed the seal into the waterpump,Great..So now I get to drop the lower to get the seal out and install new one.All in all a big pain in the a–..Ran great in the driveway and didnt skip a beat on the quick upstream run I took on the river.Needless to say I plan to stick with the upstream runs for the season.
Matte, your woes make me feel better. Thanks for sharing.
Curious, how’d that 30hp carb take to the engine. Was thinking of doing that to my last 25hp but decided against, alot of floating info on that with exactly what you need to make it work, and if the juice is worth the squeeze ?
2001 90 Merc bought from a resort in Sept after their season ended.
2 starter solenoids
1 fly wheel (teeth were worn flat on one side)
1 oil reservoir. Oil warning switch went out while filming with In Fish)
1 water jacket gasket
That’s it besides a couple water pumps, spark plugs an one fuel filter.
I put on less the 200 hours per year, but she’s a purring every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
I don’t feel my motor owes me anything.
Wait, we are counting prop repairs are we??

I can’t say I’ve even replaced the spark plugs. I change oil once or twice a year and lower unit lube. Not a penny more ever. I always say I could blow up a motor tomorrow and I’d still buy the same blue/grey colored motor
No matter how good the piece of machinery is, regular maintenance is a good idea. Probably wouldn’t want to sell a rig claiming there was never really any money spent on maintenance.
Nhamm,so far so good.Only difference I noted in parts was the intake and carb are bigger but I didnt look into the differences in spec at all.I wouldnt have wasted my time with it had I not had to tear the whole motor apart to begin with so I figured why not since I had all the parts allready.Ran a 30 of the same vintage as the 25 on the same boat and honestly really couldnt tell much of a difference and Im pretty used to these motors since they are all I have ever ran.Years ago it was a project/repair I never would have taken on myself but since Im cheap and would rather fish more than work I have learned alot about repairing my outboard and truck, lol.Good luck with your motor.I know it sucks but the more you repair it the more you learn and that will help you in the long run.

Genius! That’s very well stated and I would encourage younger fishermen to take that statement to heart, even if you’re not especially mechanically inclined.

Motor is down again and I’m sick of learning and repairing……
I used to put decent hours on my main motor….. but then I had a neck/shoulder injury and started trolling a helluva lot(plus becoming a family guy) I hope have no clue how many hours my yammy T8 has, but if it died tomorrow, I’d look for another. Main engine, a Honda, had a bad fuel pump relay that was replaced under warranty and that was it….. I would eagerly buy another Honda (or Yammay) if I needed a big motor.
Currently, I put about 35-45 hrs/yr on it. Mostly just running it to an area and then using bowmount or kicker….with yearly oil and lower unit fluid changes, it should last me a loooooong time at this rate.
My 1994 Merc 60 horse smokes so much it’s visible from space. Cold blooded and harder to start when it’s cold, but it’s been getting me up and down the river for the 12 years I’ve owned it. Had to rebuild the trim/tilt and replace a couple of relays, and blew a seal in the lower unit so one expensive repair on a 24 year old motor.
I had trouble with my Strikemaster auger, bad gas/carb issues. After getting it fixed I looked at their website to see what they recommended for storage. Strikemaster basically says the worst thing you can to a small engine is let it sit. Run ’em, and run ’em some more. This would be consistent with Joe Scegura’s experience. His motor hardly get a chance to cool off, and they keep working for him. Every thing I own that has cylinders in it gets run at least once a month.

2002 mercury 90 tiller makes oil, if I do a lot of trolling, used to bother the hell out of me,not so much any more,if I get what I think is to much, i just dump the oil,put in a another gal. Little Honda 5hp kicker, flawless. 25 hp yamaha ,cold blooded from day 1, once run a while, it’s okay . Trolls the Jon boat great.

Man, 2018 can suck it already! Hope it’s not anything major.
