Most common rod sizes?

Only been ice fishing a handful of years, went full steam and got a couple TUCRs right out of the gates, but I feel like I may have went too long. Both rods are 36″.

I usually fish south of the cities in a hole hopping setting, or in my Yukon if it’s too cold. 3-4 times a season we’ll take a trip which is usually in a sleeper. I love the rods, just wonder if 36″ is too much. In my buddies shack for example, i have to fish at an angle because the holes are directly in from of the seats/bed.

    What do most people use?

Would it be pretty easy for me to sell/trade these with someone on this board?

Personally, I use 18-24 inch lengths inside a portable.

I’d get a hold of TUCR and see what they would charge to shorten them if that’s what you want. That’s the advantage of buying from smaller companies, they often are more willing to go the extra mile for a customer.

    Oooh thats a good idea.

My other thought was to just buy a 28″ bullwhip. My Precision and Noodle are 36… the bullwhip might just fill that void.

Although, the precision probably gets used inside a shack the most since it’s my walleye rod and when we’re up north walleye hunting, we’re in shacks.

Ya they would have to strip off the handle and hook keeper and re apply them. They might just give you a trade in towards a new one….. John is a cool cat

I talked to John briefly, it’s not ideal to resize them as much as I want.

Solution… keep them for hole hopping and just buy a smaller rod(s) to add to my collection!

How short are you looking to go? I have a 34″ precision and 32 inch noodles if it would help you out.

Most all of my ice rods are in the 24-28″ range, mostly 28″. I have a few hole hopping rods in the 32-42″ range, but seldom use them. I tend to kneel on the ice when hole hopping, maybe that’s why my knees are so bad…When kneeling, a 28″ rods fits nicely.

I also have a couple of 18-19″ rods that I will use when pan-fishing with a group of people in a house. It lets you maximize space so much better. The 13 Whiteout has a good backbone for the size. The JM sight fishing rod is good for nothing with zero backbone, I have 2 and they don’t leave my basement. I really enjoy my TUCR Maestro, it has a very extreme taper with a great backbone for a rod of that size. I’ve set into a 30+” pike on a 19″ Maestro with a Marmooska and it was a chore to manage, but I got it in…

All of the TUCR’s I’ve seen being sold on this forum haven’t lasted long as a for sale thread, just saying. Post them for sale on here. Sell them and put it towards some new ones. People are just starting to come around to the upcoming ice season so traffic here should be picking up soon.

I like 30″-32″ rods. I have a 30″ bullwhip and my 30″ precision noodle should be here in a week or so. I find those lengths to be a good middle ground between too short and too long. They fit well in most shacks and aren’t too short to hop around with, IMO.

Are you looking to sell/trade? I was thinking a 32″P and a 30″ or 28″PN but haven’t fully decided yet

wasn’t looking to sell but I might be willing to trade to help you shed a couple inches. They are unused, extra rods so it’s not a big deal to me. Split grip Eva handles

So what TUCR’s do most of you guys have/use? Along with shortening my existing i’ve been thinking about getting a third.

The Noodle and Precision arsenal is great. But that noodle is worthless on a really windy day outside the shack! I was initially thinking I’d add a bullwhip but I hear nothing but great things on the quick tip. Based off a chart that John sent over, both rods fill that small void left from the noodle/precision, but the bull whip will handle smaller jigs a touch better.

And then I started thinking, get a quick tip AND a bullwhip and sell the noodle. Bullwhip handles a larger variety of jig sizes and has a smaller noodle section.

Oh and I also want their dead stick!

    Yeah… it’s only October 4.

I’m not sure I agree that the Bw will handle smaller jigs better than the qt. The rods fish different. Bw is a glass rod that you see the bite. Qt is a very sensitive carbon rod where you feel the bite. I prefer the qt most times over the Bw. That being said I love fishing with the pn. Most my fishing is for Panfish though

I have no idea! The guys at TUCR made a rod spectrum showing ideal jig weights per rod.

QT’s ideal range is 1/8 to between 1/16 and 1/32
BW is 1/8 down to almost 1/64
PN is 1/16 to past 1/64

Have you used a BW for panfish? I love my PN as well, I just like the idea that the BW can handle a heavier jig a bit more efficiently yet still has the noodle tip, and has enough backbone to handle a walleye well.

I just don’t know if it’s a waste to have both a PN and a BW. So I either get a QT, or get a QT and a BW and sell my PN!

Most if not all of my local fishing is for pans as well, only on our trips up north do we hunt walleye.

I have a 28″ DH Al Dente that I actually use on Red for walleye. It works great when the fish are finicky and like smaller presentations. It has plenty of backbone to bring in walleye in the 15″ and bellow size.

I fish outside quite a bit, I like my 32″+ rods. I just adjust holes and shack for fishing inside with them.

32″ is about perfect for me. I can use them inside a hut but they r good length for hole hopping

You just need a bigger ice shelter.sometimes I use my 5.5 ft ultralight because I have the room and don’t want to waste it.

I have been in the same situation as you. I have a bullwhip and a precision noodle. I am thinking of adding a precision or another bullwhip. as far as rod length if your outside most of time I would think 32 is perfect for sure in a shack you will not want 36.

I am not in the market but for sure you could sell those rods and get close to what you paid.

got a St croix avid glass for inside the shack bluegill and crappie fishing and love the fight of the fish on that rod. Pretty sure it is a 24 or 28 inch. Awesome rod.

I like shorter rods, even when hole hopping. I don’t think I’d like using a noodle rod over 28″, the tip becomes further away and more affected by wind IMO.

For panfish I love my 24″ power noodle in the house and my 28″ precision noodle out of the house.

I really dislike using longer rods in a house, you have to be so much more aware of where your rod tip is before setting the hook. Which is tough when fish are in the ‘get me to follow a jig 5 feet up before I bite’ mood.

Just my thoughts but rod length is an individual preference. Its whatever works for you.I got a 32in BW last year and love it,but it doesn’t handle 1\16 spoons like I thought it would.New QT in the mail.I think that’s the better choice for spoons and heavier tungsten.Rod length your choice.
