What are some of the most beautiful lakes you guys have been on? I love to go fishing, but I’ve been known on occasion to put the rods down when the bite is slow and just lay back in the boat and take in the view. So whats your favorite lake to do this on? Its been a while since ive been up that way but I remember Vermilion being a sight to take in

Wintertime, at about dusk, when birds of all sorts, colors, and sizes fly back upriver for the night in the Monticello area is truly fantastic. Hundreds, thousands at times flying no farther than a cast away. It’s a spectacle you don’t have to drive far for.

I have not been up there for 25 years but its beauty is burnt into my mind. We carried a canoe off of Snowbank into a lake I think was called Flash and hammered walleyes. So much fun…RR
TimmyPosts: 1245March 3, 2016 at 9:39 am #1603953Off of Malberg Lake in the BWCA there are several places that we camped for years, Boze, Fern/Frond depending on the map, and Louse.
The campsite on Bose was one of the best, way back in the late 50’s or early 60’s my father, uncle, and two friends hauled a picnic table up river from one of the lower lakes. They turned it upside down and put it on top of the canoe. It was there until 1994, someone either burnt it or the Rangers used it to make a Johnny pot which was never there before that. We painted that table several times over the years to preserve it, what a shame it was to find it gone.
In 94 my cousin actually caught a 42″ northern with the hook on his arm. He lost his arm 2 years before that in a work related accident just below the elbow. It was the middle of the day and we had a long stringer out with a 6-7 lb northern on it. We saw a large tail fanning the top of the water where we had the northern tied up, we knew it was way bigger than the one on the stringer.
Well that stringer started jerking like crazy, I grabbed it and started to pull it in and that big northern had the other one sideways in his mouth and was not going to let go. I pulled it all the way into the shore and he turned and swam back out. We were going to get the gaff but the guys out fishing had it with them. So we decided to try and pull it back in and my cousin Would try to hook it under the jaw while I tried to get our small net over it’s tail.
Well the net part didn’t work so good, but my cousin got his hook right under the jaw and he pulled that northern up onto the shore and we both jumped on it laughing our butts off. I will have to post a picture of the two of us with the northern.
March 3, 2016 at 9:52 am #1603964Hard to argue with any of the shield lakes in the BWCA or Voyageurs National Park. I’m also partial to the lakes in the Park Rapids/Walker area with crystal clear water and sandy bottoms they have almost an aquamarine color, just have a lot of cabins/docks mixed in which detracts a little imo.

X3
Been quite a while since I’ve been up there but its a beautiful place. Chasing Lakers right after ice out is a pretty cool experience on that lake.
March 3, 2016 at 10:45 am #1603988I should add superior something about winter time and snow on shore sitting In Your boat is a little bit of heaven and some beautiful diver ducks out there as well.

mcarlsenPosts: 95March 3, 2016 at 12:08 pm #1604030Yep, Rainy, BWCA but I have to throw Vermillion in there too. Love that lake.
March 3, 2016 at 12:14 pm #1604031I haven’t been to near as many lakes as most of you on here but I definitely agree with mcarlsen on Vermillion. With that lake having 365 islands and all the bays it has it’s just picturesque. I think the theme you see from some of these responses is that a lot of times it’s the shoreline that makes the view. At Vermillion and much of that arrowhead region when you’re on the water you can look to shore and it’s like you’re in the middle of the woods.
