Morels today

Ma and I took a drive towards the river today to snoop for some morels after all the rain we’ve had. I didn’t have to get far off blacktop. We were driving along a gravel road with lots of mixed dead/alive trees, most were elm. I spotted the first morel while driving. There are others at the same tree. We found a mess of them and a whole lot more pheasant backs. The pheasant backs were everywhere, but most were already too large.

We’ll be dining on the wild side tonight with our grilled burgers.

Tons of cars and traffic in Whitewater Valley near Beaver. The hills were alive, and not with the sound of music.

    That’s what ya want.

We were on public land. Private lands were crawling with people today. I plan to get back in the woods tomorrow….after fishing of course.

Hey Tom. You have better eyes than I do. Spotted em while driving. Nice.
We found a few today. Enough to get a taste.
    The heat today will help.
How’s LZ? Think I have Friday morning open so will try to call you tomorrow. Crappies?
Good luck on the shrooms. Will get better from here on out.

Awesome!! I’m planning on taking the wife & kids on a Morel adventure Saturday as long as the rain holds off in the AM. Buddy of mine found quite a few on Tuesday. Should be in their prime about now!

Good to hear your getting them down there.. I was out in a few areas here in the cities and found about 60 over the last two afternoons but a many were already past their prime. Still plenty enough to have some morel/swiss chicken last night. Was tasty!!

If you find the right spot you might get some. Spent 3 hours this morning and found 8. Shitty.
Checked a lot of dead trees and nothing. Maybe need heat?
Rain and heat coming so thinking early next week might be good…maybe.

Found about 20 at my normal spots today. Found some ramps as a bonus.

found another 30 or so last night, but suffered a mild meltdown when I stumbled across a couple pounds all burnt and useless by the same patch of trees.

My season here in SE MN is probably done. I don’t fight 3’+ high brush and the heat around 80 really slams the door shut on the season in my best spots. It’s been a decent year with 10# or so, but nowhere near what last year was with picking 30+#. The dry start really hindered the first good flush here.

The morels we found were less than fresh too Bucky. They were high up along ridge-top roads. Even the pheasant backs were more mature and most could not be eaten due to size, but I found enough 2-3″ to make a nice mess.

I always found my early mushrooms on western facing slopes and low areas where daytime heat wells up. I saw nothing on western slopes, nothing down low and everything came right along the ridge-top.

I found a lot of morel stumps today so I was apparently a little late to the party. It wasn’t a complete waste though. I found a couple logs that were absolutely covered in Chickens and a few nice tender pheasant backs. There were so many chicken of the woods I filled my bag, and had to leave probably close to 20lbs behind. Needless to say my family will be very happy when I show up to the BBQ tomorrow!

Were getting our first rain of the year as I’m writing this. Forcast is rain off and on for the next two days so I’m hoping by next Friday to find my first ones of the year. I seen some lilacs today that were just starting to pop some small flowers. I’m hoping everything will start popping big time by next Friday. I’ve been looking every Sunday for the last three weeks and have found promising locations but it’s been so dry the ferns haven’t even come up as of last Friday. I hope I didn’t miss my chance to find some this year already.
