Its around late April to early May here, May 1st seems to be consistant. Ive been watching the warming up but can’t see anything to depend on yet, too far out on the calendar.

Found a bunch May 6th in SE Minnesota last year, although it was HOT and a bit too dry in some normal spots for me.

I don’t want anyone to give up there spot. But what kind of areas would you look for to find them?

    In the woods…. rotflol rotflol

In all seriousness, south facing slopes and dead elms are a good place go start.

I found these on my logs this morning. Shitakis. The logs are about 7 years old and I thought were worn out but there they were. It looks like there are more buds too so one never knows. I have three new oak totems inoculating right now and may have a short flush of goodies this fall, spring for certain next year.

Found in one small area north side with moss and short grass elms but not really around them. They amaze me every year I find somewhereal they shouldn’t be. Normal early spots all fruitless

Ranger rick, what part of the country are you. So we know how far north it has progressed. I scouted a couple of woods this week, and I think it’s way too early in my neck of the woods (west of the cities an hour). But I am new to shroomin.

    Thanks, Drifter.

Anyone have a clue how this projected cold snap might impact morels this week? It’s looking like there have been some sightings in southern MN so I thought this coming weekend might be decent, but it’s going to get pretty cold(low thirties mid week).

Would that normally delay things or not matter much at this point?

The cold is no good!! The moisture will help but need some a couple hot days that carry warm air all night. Blacks might be starting to show up here by the metro soon but the big show is still a couple weeks out for us.

The ground temp needs to warm up, this cold crap is not going to help me in western Wi, it’s still getting cold at nite, yes some are always found but I’m in no hurry to make a day of it, it’s just my opinion and by no means am I a serious shroomer

I in the St Paul area and found them as early as 4/17. That was a freak year and those early ones were all blacks.. I have found them well into June on late years.. I would say we are on track this year to see them start here the 1st week of May. That’s just my guess.

I am ready to go when they start popping.. Here is a picture of beauty that had a base the size of a pop can. Was a biggun.

I figured there would be an active post on morelles and heres whats going on here. Everybodys finding them and lots of them and some really big ones. My boy called me yesterday and said he seen a post on facebook of a morelle the size of a 2 liter bottle with the base half that size. Another person who is a cashier at a local gas station said her friends posted a picture of a pile of schrooms that was 5 feet long about 3 feet wide and 2 feet tall. Their finding them almost everywhere thier looking and I’m going later today. The local news said that this is the best year in many many years, I walked across the street into a small timber and didn’t find many but I did find 4 nice greys that were about 4″ tall and that’s a fair sized grey, most are much smaller, in other words their pounding them around here. If I do any good I’ll post the results later today, darned work anyway.

I “felt” they were here and even looked long enough to get a tick over lunch today. Problem is all my old spots no longer produce and its hard to find new ones around here. I always wanted to search SE MN for a weekend but my priorities are fishing and wheeling this time of year so I’m never willing to sacrifice a weekend to do it. Ill give it the ole college try around here next week.
