This wind has shifted ice on Bago, and opened up some cracks on what was already “iffy” ice for vehicle use. Very sad, vehicles have gone through this morning, and the rescue teams were out to pull two out. As of now, the info on who/ages/ and conditions are all rumors. Someone on Facebook reported one was a 12 year old girl that died – again, I DON”T KNOW if that is fact.

Sad indeed. I still maintain the only safe ice is that in my glass.

    Keep us posted.

I hope it is only a rumor. There can never be enough said about ice safety.

Bob, its sad we had that conversation last Sunday. After our 4 to 5 mile hike of punching holes, there was no way in hell I would have taken a vehicle out there. A family without a father, and possibly without a child. Horrible

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family. This was my brother in laws fishing partner and someone who fishes almost daily. It was a freak thing and ice is never “safe” regardless of what your driving. Our ice fishing community is relatively small and when something like this happens we need to band together instead of turning this into an ice safety clinic.

    This is very sad.

I go out fishing on Wisconsin River reseviors with my 7 year old in our jeep every week. Big bodies with current are scary.

Were the victims driving parallel with the crack at a short distance, like within 12-25′ of the crack? Or were they further away or real close to it? Was the crack hard to see with snow and sun?

I only have 3 years of ice experience, I want to know what/what not to do if I came across a situation like that, and how to safely get out of that situation.

    Chris,

The crack formed overnight from the strong wind — it ran right down the middle of the road parallel to the treeline. I suspect they never saw it as they were driving out in the dark before sunrise, 6:52am is when the call was made to 9/11.

Travis, I don’t think anyone is wanting to take this in that direction. 13″ of good ice is good for a Jeep and I’m sure not many would have expected this crack to develop like it did. Bob and I for a number of irregular areas in the ice and had concerns of someone going through. This is just a tragic situation that we all hate to see. As a father, it hits home for me and can’t begin to imagine what his family is facing. Our thoughts and prayers for the family

    Gut wrenching.
That is one sketchy lake with way too many accidents.

As a father and avid ice angler I shed a tear for all involved! Nothing can be said that will end there pain! Just send a prayer to them! We also must thank the rescue squad and dive team! These folks put there lives on the line daily to help in these tragedies! Send a prayer to then also! I could not imagine how it must tear at somebody doing that job!
