Can’t seem to find anything on the other forums, what are your guys thoughts? Lining up all my ducks for tomorrows build, well partial, the carriage has to wait a week.

Do you want to pigeon toe the skis just a tad to keep it on a straight line, or having them equal pull straight?

Does the natural curve of the skis play any part in resistance for pulling? Would you want to flatten them out first or is it a non factor? If you do, how?

Just my opinion but towing the skies would cause extra drag. I have not seen anyone’s sled set up with a third brace so it would be my guess that no one has worried about the bow.

I like the aluminum frames, especially this one that collapses and has good sides. Just need some ratchet straps or bungee cords to hold the shack down.

nhamm I built mine last year using 2×8’s. Some guys use 2×6’s it’s all personal preference or what wood you have on hand. For my cross braces I used 2×2’s and notched them down into the 2×8’s it’s quite easy to do. I drilled holes in the sides of the 2×8’s and put in some I bolts to attach bungies to. I just drilled a hole in each tip of the skis for my rope and it pulls perfect and super easy. Last year I pulled my Otter Cottage on it and it was unbelievable the difference it made. This year if I ever get on some ice I’ll put my new Hideout on it when the snow gets deep. If you want pics of mine let me know.

Hardest part was figuring the cross braces and keeping everything squared up. My holes in the skis were perfect but my drill wanted to veer off a tad just a bit when going into the 2x8s. That left the risers just a snitch uneven.

Wish I could just paint these suckers, I got a thing about not painting wood. Would save alot of time in the finishing department.

I just notched the 2x4s and the risers and lock them together.

Great idea, maddog. The top picture makes sense. But, the lower picture confuses me. Do you have a picture of the whole sled when put together?
    Thanks,
    Al

Yea, I expected it to drop on the other way, adding support to the skis kicking in or out from center. Most of the pics I see don’t have what I would have thought would be a must for bracing.

Thought about this on the way home today, why not put a ski rack on your rig. That way you could just put the smitty on the roof and lock it down with ski rack. I am an old down hill skier and have old ski rack that I might give this a try, no need to tear down.

Also thinking HDPE for the runners might be an option instead of ski’s, not sure but you could make the complete unit from HDPE, it would last a lifetime.

Well getting to know a new welder and what better way to practice then building something useful. Can be tugged with a rope or flip out toung for quad. A bit overkill but already have ideas for next one.

Impressive!! Wish I had knowledge on welding/fabrication and such like that.

? Is the sled used just for transporting, then the shack taken off to use each time? I was at one point going to attach skis directly to the bottom of my two man. Maybe with just a two inch riser.

Actually the second picture is wrong the 2×4 should be rotated 180 degrees so the notch faces the rear.I was going to put the 2X4 facing down but I wanted less shifting of the skis forward and backward.I had no problems with it this was.

This one was made for a heavy duty tote rod case and 20# tank in the center. Hub tent on one side and auger on the other.

Got a buddy that is interested in one built to his specs.
