More battery?

I run an Alumacraft escape 165. With a Yamaha 50. I have a terrova up front. I have two batteries. One in back and one in front. I have been using humminbird 798 something and just bought a helix 10 gen2. I would like to run them side by side in the back.

Do I need another battery? I have never ran two units.

I don’t think you would need a second battery in the back, but I would certainly look at upgrading the size of the battery you have there and go with either a dual purpose or a deep cycle in the back as well.
I’m guessing the battery you have there is a cranking battery and that will not hold up for long running two units like that especially if you have livewell, lights, radio, etc going at the same time.

Do you run any other electric accessories like electric downriggers? By themselves, the finders won’t be a big battery draw but finders are very sensitive to battery voltage. If you have other competing items for that back battery juice, I’d maybe think about adding another battery and a perko switch.

Last year I added a third battery and charger to my boat…Now I wish I hadn’t and I can’t use my charger unless I have three batteries. I originally wanted one for the motor, one for trolling motor, and one for finder after having some issues.

Is it possible to run double leads to one battery? Never tried, Im not sure what would happen with todays “smart chargers”. something to try maybe?

Bob, can you expand on why you wish you hadn’t?

I run two batteries for the terrova and one cranking/electronics battery. I also carry a set of jumper cables. If it gets bad, I can always jump off the trolling batteries. Be careful mixing series and parallel circuits… 24volts is bad on 12volt circuits. Be careful of the added weight. All three of my batteries are in the back. Weight distribution is a little heavy in the back. Depending on how old your Yamaha is it has a decent alternator. My t8 kicker puts out enough amps to wash out any amp draw off of my electronics. A good battery charger will extend the life of your batteries. Tight lines hope this helps

I have a three bank charger and in the manual it says if you only have two batteries run multiple leads to one of the batteries.

Why can’t you use your charger unless you have 3 batteries?? The bank without a battery will just not charge when it senses no battery.

I HIGHLY suggest 3 batteries. 2 of the batteries should be dedicated to your Terrova, you absolutely do not want to run your fish finders on 24v.

The 3rd battery will run everything else without a problem. I run 2 graphs, 2 aerators, and crank the motor with one battery all day long and it barely loses a charge.

Make sure that the 2 trolling motor batteries are bought at the same time and are identical. This will extend their life. There is also a conditioning process that should do over the first 20 or so uses that will also extend the battery life.

Smart chargers are worth every dime too. Not only will they extend the battery life, but they won’t over charge and help with winterization.

judging by the size of his boat I imagine his trolling motor is a 12volt.

    Terrovas are 24v.

I have a 24v Terrova on the bow and a 24v Vantage on the transom. Of course, they are not running at the same time, but I’ve had no problems so far. I DO have separate circuit protectors to both motors and an onboard charger to all three batteries.

Didn’t know they had a 12v model. They only had the 80# when I bought mine.

!2, 24 and 36 volt were to be had when the Terrova I-Pilots 1st came out on the market, I’m not going to argue exactly which one became available first but they all hit with in the same model year as I recall.

I bought the very first Terrova I-Pilot 101 lb 36volt 60″ shaft with the US2 that Bass Pro Shops company wide ever sold through their retail stores. Not for sure but I think the Altoona IA opened in 2009 and I bought it that spring, or the spring following. I just don’t remember when they opened in 09, early or late of the year.

Well I certainly didn’t know they had a 55# Terrova, my bad.

My Minn Kota 3 bank charger operates each bank independently. If one battery shorts out or gets disconnected the other 2 banks keep charging. Other chargers may be different.

Bob, that’s strange. Right out of the Pro Mariner 20+ book it states if you only two batteries are used connect unused output cable to either of the two batteries. Pro mariner makes Cabelas pro series chargers. Must be made different.

This charger is about 6 years old. They may have changed there tune due to issues with that theory. I’ve always had three batteries so I never tested that theory. Does make a guy wonder though doesn’t it.
