I recently bought a new boat with this finder and a Minnkota terrova I pilot with link. I updated the finder and Humminbird is sending me a new Ethernet cable to hopefully cure the other not connecting from the terrovia to the finder BUT

Now the last trip and today we get on water finder and down imaging is working fine. Then the finder starts jumping from 150′ deep water we were trolling in to 1.9′ 2.9′ 7.2′. Then a little while later it would start reading the correct depth, fish and downrrigger ball then BAM it’s readying 1.9′ feet deep

Has anyone else had this type of problem? If so can you please tell me what you did to fix it? I have 12.3 – 13 volts the battery connections are clean and tight, the finder is updated and it’s running off my big motor starting battery and the connection in the back of the finder are all good connections
The terrovia is running off its own seperate batteries. Please help it’s driving me nuts thank you Trfishin

Try these one at a time to find the adjustment that cures the problem:

    1. Adjust the surface clutter setting down.
    2. Run the Switchfire setting in Clear mode.
    3. Adjust the sensitivity down.

Change your max depth setting to something 50 deeper than you ever intend to be rather than the 1500 default.

I have a humminbird 998c and i also loose depth ,it just goes crazy for awhile then it finds its self and all is good.I was thinking it could be I set the depth range to shallow . And it was lost so to speak,I guess I could try setting on manual and let adjust its self for depth. Any thoughts to this theory? Thanks for the help……

I have heard as well that setting the depth range works to help this. Personally, I would contact humminbird support and see what they say. I am guessing they would have you start by resetting the unit to defaults and then trying it again. Or if you still have that Sd card with the unit update on it you could try to stick that in and see if it will install it again. I feel terrible that you have had these issues. These things can happen with all electronics. Stick it out and you will be happy. I just have my 899 with link out today to get ready for walleye opener today and it worked great!

Also, the tranducer placement can play a large factor. If possible post a couple pictures on you ducer on the boat so we can see its location? Is it happening at slow speed or on plane? Mine struggles on plane to keep depth. Doesn’t really bother me as I know the lakes I fish well.

Not sure kfrj01 I have tried mine on automactic and tried it on manual a little deeper than what i was fishing at and it still goes crazy one mine reading 1.9′ etc to reading fine the next I cant figure it out along with all the other problems Im having
Mine is brand new just got the boat with the
humminbird 859ci HD DI finder and a 24v Minnkota I pilot with link. I have tried all kinds of stuff talking with other humminbird and minnkota users and I still cant get my problems figured out Plus hours online chatroom at humminbird and still cant get anywhere. Im about to pull the last of my hair out I spent a ton of money on this finder and i pilot with link set up only to have it crap out on me.

Hey JAnderson I have reset the defaults 2 times now and still no change still the same problems. I will try to post some pictures of the transducer its just a little bit below the bottom of the transom it is having the same problems sitting slow trolling or on plane. What i cant figure out is why the first few times out the finder was reading everything Perfect then BAM its going hay wire with the depth etc even after the update on the finder.

The other problem i was talking about with the Ethernet cable is that i unhooked the long extention ethernet cable that goes to the front of my boat then put my minnkota on the floor with the power on and hooked the cable on the minnkota up to the short either net cable coming out my finder together deployed the motor and shortly after still the same thing flashes I pilot connected shutting down power and shuts my fish finder off I dont know what else to do I spent 4 hrs on the water yesterday messing with it

Im going to call humminbird tomorrow and see if i can get something figured out. thanks for the help guys

On your finder you have the option to set the “digital depth source” in the menus. Make sure it is set to 2d element and not using the di to display depth.

I’m not sure exactly where this is located in the menu but I am guessing it’s under the sonar tan somewhere.

Try messin with the surface clutter and see if that helps.

Also, do you know anyone else with a di unit? Possibly try your unit on that boat?

Is this the only unit on the boat? Possibly getting interference from another unit if you have one.

The more I think about it. With all the problems you have, it may be an issue with the unit. Keep calling humminbird and document what you are doing. They will replace or fix if needed.

Yup it’s the only finder I have on my boat And I don’t know anyone else that has a finder or I pilot with the link. They all run just the I pilot terrova mostly for spot lock for jigging for lake trout

I did check the finder it’s running on the 2D element I checked that yesterday on the water I’m going to call hummingbird tomorrow and see what they say thanks again I’ll let you know what I find out

If you’ve fixed this already please ignore.

Seems reading this you may have two things going on. The main issue is your bottom depth reading. I’m also reading some things about your Terrova and Lync.

How about getting the two things completely separated? Unplug any non-essential connections like the Ethernet? Only have power and the transducer connected then test the bottom readings.

Probably won’t make a difference but it will at least eliminate other items from the root cause category.

I believe he has narrowed the problem down. Maybe we can get a report on the fix for his issues?

I just started having the same problem with my helix si. The side bar is showing an incorrect depth reading but the sonar pictures are showing correct depth, I checked it with an anchor. And the gps started losing signal. Good battery, voltage and connections. I am curious what the fix will be. Keep us posted.

Well sorry for the late reply I finally got my 859 working I called Humminbird and got the latest update on my finder. The link on my I pilot is a different story.

Tried everything to get it to link to my finder after Humminbird transfered me to Minnkota the lady had be erase all the spot locks etc on my link controller then I was able to update my link controller and remote

Now everything is working good I haven’t been out on. The water to try it as my boat is in the shop. As for the depth wacking out going to 1.9′ deep Humminbird said to change the range from auto to manual and adjust it a little deeper than what I’m fishing and change from fresh water to salt water as that’s what they were finding to make the finder keep track of the bottom
