    Interesting story from today’s strib.

Epic waves crash above cliffs on Lake Superior’s shore
Winds were clocked at up to 59 mph during the storms earlier this week.

Monster-size waves slammed the North Shore as a spring storm whipped up Lake Superior earlier this week.
“The storm blew all night Sunday and into Monday with winds hitting 40 mph and up to get the swells there,” said photographer Christian Dalbec. Dalbec, who can view Lake Superior from his home in Two Harbors, stood on Crystal Beach at Tettegouche State Park to capture waves crashing into the 100-foot cliff. “The swells moved down the lake and it got wild.”
Often times, the waves come in sets of three, he said. “Old fisherman call it the three sisters,” Dalbec said. The waves hit the wall, bounce back and amplify the next one. The wave he captured Monday was the one of the biggest series of waves he’s seen in about a decade.
Dean Packingham, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Duluth said the strongest wind recorded during this week’s storm was clocked at 59 mph near Devils Island, one of the Apostle Islands. The storm produced large swells on Lake Superior, including one measuring more than 15 feet, he said.
“That’s big for spring,” Packingham said. The waves tend to be even larger during the fall storms that blow across Lake Superior, he said.
Dalbec, dressed in a wet suit, often stands in the lake to better capture waves. But not on Monday. “I’m crazy,” he said. “But not that crazy.”
Standing on the shoreline, Dalbec said he was in awe. “It makes you feel small.”

Yeah it was nasty up there I was out on the water Tuesday out of two harbors with my skeeter it was rough 6-10ft waves with the occasional 10-12 footer mixed in. And no they were nothing like what you have pictured or I wouldn’t have been out! We did one troll for about 2 hours without a bite and got off when we got to the ramp the two harbors police were there checking in is apparently someone called on and said a 16′ boat was out fishing. So they were keeping an eye out with the binos on us. He could see we went having any trouble at all. They were big waves but only had one crash over the back of the boat while fishing non over the bow on the 2 mile ride in. Just gotta take it slow and be smart and no what your boat is capable of. By the way my boat is the mx2025 so no not a 16footer and all was good except the bite. It was a little tough managing a speed out there to say the least.

Second pic gives you a good idea how tall the waves were.

Awesome pics Mike. For anyone who hasn’t fished superior in rough seas, a picture will never do justice to what it actually looks and feels like out there.

Damn, I thought I was nuts out there sometimes. I’ve been out in that too and never felt comfortable for one minute.

That looks familiar. love those big waves.

I was with a crew out of guys on the lake out of Duluth entry a few years ago in the fall when the wind came up and we were 12 miles out. The boat was a 32 footer and when we came thru the canal and lift bridge the waves were running about 6″ from the top of the canal walls, even out on the lake. That was roly-poly enough for me.

I wonder if the surfers were out in Duluth?

I suppose it’s not that often in the Midwest to be sitting in a fishing boat and watching the shoreline disappear. I’ve done it in a kayak but never a boat.

Lake Superior has a knack for rolling up some superb visuals.
