Anyone else getting overrun by moles this fall?
I’ve tried 4 different style traps and can’t catch em’. Not a poison guy either since we’ve got dogs running around. As a kid, we lost a dog due to rodent poison in the yard.

if you have some spare time, what I did 2 years ago was stuck the garden hose into one of the active holes and just waited. About 30 minutes later I saw the ground moving where the mole was trying to dig out a new tunnel of fix the flood or whetever his thought process was. .22lr into the dirt, one scoop with a shovel and I recovered the body to confirm the kill.
I don’t use poison for the same reason you mentioned. I feel like my method isn’t exactly time efficient but it was more fun and no poison involved.
Moles are one of the easiest critters to catch with a V style clamp trap or the loop trap. You step down a foot wide part of his tunnel and set the trap, when he comes cruising down the tunnel POP you got him. Sometimes with only one trap it can take awhile because they have so many trails, that’s why I have 5 traps. Also put down a Grub killer late spring as that’s what they are feeding on.
Simple to set, very effective, no special preparation, just find and active tunnel and step on the trap. Voila, usually you’ll have it by morning.
Yep, and I’ve noticed a pattern over the last couple years; they seem to be most active at the surface whenever we’re in a drought, and much less so when we’ve had a lot of precipitation. It seems backwards but I have noticed. This early summer, when it was super wet and healthy, they were almost non existent on the surface, at least in my yard…
As far as trapping, use the scissor style and learn how and where to set them correctly. Absolute game changer for me. Have probably caught 12-15 or more the last 2 summers so far. Even got a double a month or two ago!
i had moles few years back, in town here we have a town and country store, affiliated with the coop here. they gave me some kind of smoke bomb. i found the holes in the lawn covered them with a pail and lit them things. no more moles but good grief did that stuff stink!!!!!!!
I have had some luck with traps but have caught far more by stomping down the whole tunnel, waiting 20 minutes or so and going back out with a shovel. Regularly catch them in the act of rebuilding the tunnel.
