WOW, with all the rain last night I have a feeling the WI opener will be a tough one. Looks like its going to be a weekend fishing the smaller creeks. Anyone else heading out this weekend?

I was planning on the Rush on Sunday early morning… but sometimes, plans can change…. I’m guessing the 8″ of snow might melt rather muddily…

Any alternates up by the Twin Cities Metro come to mind for smaller streams in the area?

Fished the WI opener Saturday afternoon with some success. I started out throwing a No. 9 Rapala without success and switched to a Gold Panther Martin. Fished that awhile without any strikes before I switched to a silver Super Bow Spinner. I caught 3 trout shortly afterward (between 9″-15″). My buddy who started with a Super Bow caught a nice brown around 15 inches before tying into a huge rainbow. The fish measured over 21 inches and was very thick. After catching another brown around 17 inches and a shortfish the bite went south. It seemed the farther we walked up the stream the tougher the bite got. Most of the upriver holes were quite a bit smaller and we just couldn’t get bit. We eventually came back where we started and landed a couple more fish, one of them a 19 inch rainbow.

The streams weren’t near as muddy as I was anticipating. In there slightly muddy state I think the bigger size of the Super Bows and their flash definitly made a difference. It was a little disappointing that the rapala bite didn’t work for us, alot of times in muddy water I’ve had great success with them in the past. All in all not a bad day to start out the trout season.
