Bow hunting has not been going all that well for me so lately while I am sitting in my stand I am thinking about the winter trout season. Anyone else getting the itch?
It is probably my favorite time to fish. Everyone else is off sitting on a giant ice cube or at the house so the streams are basically mine!
    Kinda selfish but oh well!

Winkles may I ask where you normally fish? Find a warm day and WW is packed, same for Hay. It is a 1.5hr drive minimum to southeast so it is pretty much an all day deal. That does not fly with my wife so I only get out two maybe three times tops for pre-season. I do like Rush and Pine because they are less crowded. Hopefully ALL trout streams will be open for pre-season Jan 1 2011, even better!

Best time of day? Fly fishing it often takes the sun to get midges and scuds moving so no need to be on the water early. 11-3 is the most productive time for me. How about you?

It just all depends. I am a wanderer. I love to fish new spots and different spots, that has be hampered as of late do to my health.

I will fish WW, beaver, gribean, garvin, pine, rush, wisel, to name a few. It all depends on how cold it is and how much time I have to fish.

Typically it is around 10-4. It is just satisfying to be out there when ever I can. I fish for as long as my fingers can take it.

Winkles, great attitude. A love for the sport for sure. Sorry about your poor health recently. I hope you get out and enjoy in 2010 and wish you a speedy recovery.

Thanks for your insight on favorite streams. Nail on the head. Those are favorites too. Can see the passion. Anyway, I wish you all the best planning your first trip for 2010. I have spinners and plastic worms. I have gift certificates for Fleet Farm for a second spinning reel. I like to double up and have two poles ready to roll.

Yet pre-season if I’m going to go double barrel it is going to be scud and midges fly and spinners and Berkley PowerBait garlic scented 3″ worms on barbless hooks. Hay – Pine – Gribben – Duschee – WW – Beaver Creek – Crooked Creek – SBRR – Wisel.

Advice? Flies, get down deep. Add split. Slow dead drift. Watch your shadow. Watch your approach. Trout skidding this time of year.
