I fished two streams south of 90 today from 9:00-3:30. Water was exceptionally clear with flows being a bit below normal. Fish were podded up early, then moved through out the runs and riffles as the day warmed. Once it hit 10:00, they were very receptive to #18 PTs, black biot PT’s and even some caddis emergers (even though no caddis showed today). A brief BWo hatch came off around 12:30 and last no more than an hour. By 2:30 dark hendricksons came off in force for an hour. Fish were all over them more so in the second hatch versus the BWO’s.
It was a neat day as I took a client out who knows how to handle a fly rod very well, but had never fished a hatch or taken a trout on top with a dry. For him to sit on some easy trout for three hours with a dry fly was satisfying for us both.
We ran into no one on the first stream, a few fellow fly anglers from Wiscony and two bait fishermen late in the day.
