Hello all – I am looking for advice.
I’ve always been a spin fishermen, but finally decided to try fly fishing this next season. I fish Wabasha, Winona, and Fillmore counties mostly. I’ve read about nymph fishing on this site over the years. As I understand it, this is the most productive method during the winter.
I’ve done some reading but I have a couple basic questions:
1. What’s the normal range in length for the leader after the main line? What’s the length range on the tippet and is the tippet necessary? What knots are used to attach the lines, and is there a better knot for attaching the “nymph”.
2. I understand that you want the nymph to flow downstream naturally. That makes sense. Are the nymphs weighted to control depth. I have read that additional weights may be necessary, and I am assuming that would be the case for deep pools or high flow?
3. Line “mending”? I understand it will be necessary to adjust the line geometry to control drift speed. Any explanation?
Sounds like a fun way to spend some winter days practicing? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
