For those of you who may be thinking about venturing out on southeast Mn streams, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, the water levels have dropped dramatically over the past few weeks due to lack of precip. The holes and runs that you may normally frequent are markedly lower and crystal clear. Fish have begun to pod up in many cases making them very wary and spooky. Long leaders, 6X tippet, and long casts are vital to fooling these fish. There are many streams with a great deal of in-stream weed growth and accumulation, making nymphing very difficlut and challenging. That overabundance of weed growth has also make a plethora of feeding and hiding opportunities for trout (yeah, more great news ).
Tricos have just begun in the AM hours and will continue to get stronger (hopefully) as the season progresses. Think small flies and think earth tone colors with all of the clean and low water in the area.
Best of luck,
D.A.
