The winter stream trout season is almost upon us. A reminder that it is catch and relases/barbless hooks only and your 2005 license (along with a trout stamp) is legal in 2006 until the end of February.

does this apply to wisconsin as well? i have a stream just up the road that i like to fish every once in a while. I might give it a shot this winter. We did well last spring in it. Also, just wondering, what do you use this time of year to catch the trout? I used a lot of spinners in the spring, but i am not sure if they would be aggressive enough to strike one in mid winter. Also, i don’t have a fly rod so i wouldnt be using flies. what would you do?

Wisconsin doesn’t open until the first week in March (catch and release), and the harvest season there is in early May.

Spinners will work in the winter; just remember that a trout’s metabolism slows down considerably, so slow rolling and retrieving might be the best approach. Plus, a little off colored water in casting and retrieving is always a plus.

    bigfish679,
You need to try a fly!
    Packages can be very reasonable.
During the winter season, nothing beats a tumbling nymph.
It isn’t difficult to pick up and adds a whole new facet to your fishing experience.
Be careful though, other than the annual walleye opener, I have not touched my spinning equipment now for three years.
    It is addicting!
    Cheers

Or, if you think that you would get use out of a MN license and trout stamp, we could consider hooking up for some winter catch-n-release?
