A good friend and I got passes from our wives to get ut this AM for some fishing. Considering how hot it’s projected to be today and the next three, I was glad to get out as early as possible.

The stream we fished south of I90 was still slightly stained from the heavy rains earlier in the week, but it was ideal for nymphing (and for getting away with using 5x tippet). He fished mainly a Black Wet Fly with a small olive/black PT. I stuck with the standard ice dub scud and BWF trailer. We both did well and had a great time. Fish weren’t necessarily concentrated in one specific area early on, but as the sun rose and the day became warmer, the better fish certainly migrated ot the heads of the runs, so getting your flies well upstream of their hold was important for hooking up fish.

I fished without an indicator and plenty of lead (to get the scud down), and this was an extremely successful way to fish today, especially with few risers and fish holding deeper for the most part.

No hatches to speak of, a few sporadic risers early in the AM when we got on the water, and spooked up a fawn (still with plenty of spots) from about 25 feet away on our hike downstream to where we began our day. Saw two other vehicles along the route (only one angler). I love the dog days for just that reason: not many people out pounding the streams.

    Take care,
    D.A.
