With my mother-in-law visiting, I have been afforded plenty of time to hit area streams this week. Today was no exception in lots of areas: steamy morning hours where sweat dripped off much to the delight of swarm of gnats that followed me all day, fish taking the usual suspects (BWF, small PT’s, and some cdc emergers), clear and cool water with fish holding in the riffle heads, low water levels due to the lack of rain, and even a surprise or two along the way. I had my first trico sighting of the year (I was in Fillmore Co.) and with the heat being what it is, it isn’t a shocker that these guys are starting to go. I didn’t see man, and would definitely classify this hatch today as very sporadic with some very selective risers at best. I decided to use the pink post parachute ant (3P Ant) and caught a few before I switched over to a tandem nymph rig (no indicator). Thr three streams I was on were in great shape clarity wise, but the water levels, as implied earlier, are down a bit and the fish are starting to pod up a bit more than I like to see. Make good, accurate casts right away to the top of that riffle, get enough weight on to get your flies down, and skip the indicator, and you should be in good shape .
Stay cool,
D.A.
