Considering the recent onslaught of heat and humidity and the predicted forecast for mroe next week, this morning seemed like as good a time as any to get out and get a few hours of fishing in.
I traveled to Fillmore Co. to a spot I hadn’t fished yet this year. Water temps were a bit high for my liking, but I forged on sticking to basic nymphs in water that was less than gin clear but ideal for nymphing. I tandem rigged all day with (you fill in the blank here fly) and a #12 black wet fly tied with peacock ice dub. The black wet was tremendous considering I only caught about 20 fish in three solid hours on the water. The largest fish, however, was taken on a #12 beadhead Prince Nymph. Numerous browns today in the 12-16 inch class with few of the 20 I landed being dinks.
The further I walked, the better the fishing was, so there is some mreit sometimes to hiking a bit off the beaten path. Oh, and the beaten path…well, there wasn’t one, so I had to brush bust through head high grass and weeds freshly soaked with rain and dew, so I wasn’t the least bit dry for the three hours I fished, but the result in the end was well worth it.
Doubtful I’ll be out anytime soon with temperatures slated for the 90’s for the next few days.
Hoppers and tricos aren’t far away .
Take care all,
D.A.
