Im looking for any opinions on anyone fishing Bamboo flyrods, and how they are working on SE Mn trout streams. Also if anyone is fishing with Silk Fly Lines any info would be appreciated.

I inherited two lovely Bamboo rods, a 7 foot Hardy bros 5 wt and a 9 foot 8 wt Heddon.
The Heddon had an orange silk line and was used for Bass bugs. It was a lot of maintenance but cast well.
I used the Hardy on several Blue Ribbon trout streams from Michigan to Montana and though rather cumbersome feeling out of the water…get about 30 feet of fly line in the air and it practically cast itself with a incredibly smooth slow rythym.
I sold both rods after getting seduced by the new 3 & 4 weight ultra light weight carbon sticks. I loved both of those rods. Now I’ll never be able to afford to buy a new one…

Thanks for the info Tom, I was basically concerned with the ability to roll cast. As you know, and Im sure its the same in the Michigan UP, our creeks get real brushy on the sides during the summer, and a good roll casting rod is a must.
I guess I’m just getting nolstagic, but fishing with silk and bamboo just sounds like a lot of fun, and something new interesting to try.

I can remember using a 9ft bamboo Orvis back when I was a kid, a good friend of my dads let me use it for 3 weeks while we were visiting them. It was sooo smooth and roll casting was very easy. Never fished silk though. Good Luck
