I was out on Sunday, as were a few of my close fishing friends. I also got a report from another friend who was in WW yesterday, and is as follows:
Area streams still remain fishable and clean with some streams getting off-colored by the afternoon hours when temperatures have risen enough to create some run off. The run off in general has been kind to us with steady temerpatures in the mid 30’s (also projected to be in the low 40’s by/through the weekend) but dipping back down to freezing in the overnight hours.
Your window for active fish really falls between around 10:00-2:00. Before that, the water is still pretty cold, and after that the runoff has actually dropped water temperatures despite the fact that air temperatures are comfortable.
If you are a fly angler, midges continue to hatch and there have even been reports of some BWO action in the WW area as well. Spinner guys, use the 10:00-2:00 window to be on the water. I used to do a ton of spinner fishing, and I’d say slow retrieval is your best bet at this point in the early season.
Chances are all of the area trout streams will get a bit high and wide if the weather really warms quickly. The larger watersheds like the confluence areas of the WW and the Root will feel the brunt of the run off and may not be clean for a while. If that’s the case, stick to headwater and spring creeks with little agriculutral surroundings, and chances are those streams will clear relatively quickly.
Regards and good fishing,
D.A.
