    3 February 2005

Finally, I did make it out during this nice warm spell that we have had for about a week, and I was certainly not disappointed. It was a bit brisk at 9:00, but that didn’t stop the fish from picking up some basic nymphs like scuds and the Pink Squirrel. I used midge trailers all day, but it wasn’t until after 11:00 that the trout really started to pick up the trail fly. The best of the trailers included some small PT’s, basic black midge larvae, some black midge pupae, and Zebra midges. I fished with the WxDaddy for the AM session on the MBWW and bounced over to the SBWW for the an hour. There were a few sporadic risers here and there, but I don’t strip down and put on a midge dry to see if I could fool them. There were a fair amount of cars parked along the road in the WW, but considering the unseasonal weather, who could really blame them?

    Nice report DA.

I don’t want to make you work…but do you have any pictures of those “trailers”?

Midges are pretty simple stuff if you can get past the fact that they are very small in nature. I know lots of people don’t particularly like fishing midges (or tricos for that matter) because they are small. Standard brassies and midge larvae are simple. To make any emerger, add some zelon or antron wing shuck behind the head. You can also add zelon or antron to the tail as a shuck as well.

I don’t have any pictures up right now, but a picture of my midge/PT box is on the front page of my home page.

Most of the flies in that box are 16-22 size wise; the box is enlarged in the photo.

Just in case anyone was wondering…..I drove through WW last night and all the streams are up over their banks. Could be a few days to get em back to fishable conditions
