With the winter now a reality, has anyone been at the bench gearing up for the winter season?

What patterns do you focus on Dave? Mostly nymphs and scuds?

Our local FFF Chapter starts up this month. We have dinner, and a short presentation then tie flies. I don’t get going until Jan because I do a lot of late season bow hunting for deer and coyotes.
Scuds and Nymphs are two dynamite patterns James. Here is a good site for patterns and info. fly patterns

Back in the day Tom I used to spend a ton of time on the trout steams here in SE MN. But it’s been years. I checked out that site… good info. Lots of the google ads tha tare being displayed on the site are for fly tying info, materials or other “stuff” too. I’ve browsed a few of those as well.

but back to Dave’s post… when does the winter season start Dave? The MN DNR opened up that season the winter after I stopped trout fishing. So I’ve never experienced it.

I coach and try to get in some late season bow hunting as well, but I try to sit down every night and tie a few flies, then try and get a few dozen finished on the weekend.

I’ve tied a ton of scuds lately: mainly orange to amber with a few pink ones as well. Right now I’m concentrating on midges (brassies, larvae, emerger, and a few dries). They’re pretty easy since they are small and don’t require much material really.

I host a fly swap each year, so I have a dozen streamers to finish around the holidays. Tying flies is a never ending proposition .

The winter season opens January 1 for selected streams (barbless hooks/catch and release only). Here’s a complete list 2005 Trout Fishing Regulations (winter season streams as well)
