Hi all, I am new to fly fishing and I tried and finally located the Vermillion River yesturday but was able to locate an area that looked fishable. I was around Lakeville. Can anyone help me on any access spots along the river that are good for fishing. Not looking for that secret spot.

    Thanks
    David

Hmm, how can I put this. I have heard a lot of buzz from trout anglers and just general anglers alike lately on the Vermillion River. I for the life of me do not understand where this is coming from. I live near the Vermillion. It is an ecological disaster. High bacteria levels, and people in town who try to swim and fish it often get very ill. Also lots of toxins. High school classes in the area use it to study what indicator species like frogs look like when they grow six legs. Anything you could catch in it you would be putting your safety at risk to eat. Maybe perhaps at the very headwaters of the river before it goes through all the chemicals and raw sewage it picks up from farmland……otherwise, steer clear.

I have a suggestion. Get closer to the headwaters and away from urban sprawl that creates the toxins that creates six legged frogs. The reason you hear some things about the Vermillion is that there are some trout in it, in fact, some very far and few larger trout, and the reason you hear about it is that the Twin Cities TU has taken an interest in the Vermillion.

With that said, the Vermillion is under no special regulations that would protect any possibility of sustaining any relevant population of trout, nor is it being overtly protected from the dangers of over-population.

Honestly, it has the potential to be something decent, but mankind will wipe out that potential before anything can be done.

I’d suggest either Hay Creek, western Wisconsin, or traveling to beautiful southeastern Minnesota if you want to catch some trout.
