    Hello,
Welcome back to the MN river forum everyone.
I had the chance to get out on the river this last friday. It was a peach of day with temps hitting 41F.
After doing a few ice excursions this winter so far, it was great to get out and fish a little bit of open water surrounded by ice.
I was able to talk Bob Moore into joining me for this short excursion.
Though…. I wish I could tell stories of monsters taking our line, we will have to wait a few more months for those tales.
Our day was not with out a little bit of excitement to round out the adventure.
We had a few nibbles and Mr. Moore even manage to catch a couple small ones. Bob was the lucky one this day by netting and hooking a couple live shad. The one that he is holding was one of the bigger ones I’ve personally seen alive, but there were a couple that even rivaled that one.
The clock is ticking for the open water Catfish season, it will be here before we know it.

    That’s pretty cool guys.

Are you sure that’s a shad in the bottom picture though?

Looks like a goldeye to me.

Looking forward to warm weather, but making the best of the cold

BTW, that video looks very familiar. There was a spot late this fall that we were snagging them like crazy exactly like that while jigging for eyes.

Yep……they are in my freezer now.

Interesting question Dtro. I was pretty confident that It was a shad, we were seeing lots of them all sizes.
I do have the specimen frozen. (Not that is does me really any good). I still think shad but it did seem pretty big for one.

Was there no black dot? I don’t see one, but the suns reflecting pretty bright. From what I have just Googled I don’t think it is a goldeye, because the pictures I saw the mouth was an under bite without that nose. But then again, I have never seen a goldeye in real life.

On a side note. When I was young and vacationing in Park Rapids, I saw a dead floating fish that I swear was a shad. I saw a dot and from lures and watching fishing shows from the south, I identified it as a shad. It was pretty big I thought for a shad though. Maybe between 1 and 2#s if my memory serves me right.

After a bit more research, I gotta say that is probably a shad.

Its a shad.. however the blue dot isnt standing out in the picture. I have a couple in my freezer nearly 20″ long from that spot sitting on reserve

    Flathead or Blue size cut-bait.

    Thanks for the confirmation Dave.
We did see some bigger ones moving about. Nothing near 20″ those are HOGS
Wonder how they are doing after this most recent cold snap.

Thats definitely not a Goldeye that Bob is holding. It has a Gold Eye but its not a Goldeye.

This photo here is a Goldeye.

Larry, I am sure I have a few king-size shad I can donate your way if you want to give them a try this summer. My flathead fishing usually gets moe prodctive on cut bait in the late summer, but ealry may(around there), the flats usually turn on like a switch chasing live baits(suckers & chubs), I wonder if soaking a big, juicy fillet-O-fish will get a few fish feeding even earlier? A half pound chunk of shad has to be a tempting offer, no matter what the season.

    Dave,
Hold on to them Pal and We will get out together and give it a whack. I had Flathead Red over tonight and showed him the frozen shad and he about fell over. (biggest he’s seen) I’d love to show him a 20 incher.

Hanson. Thanks for showing a pic. You know they are worth a thousand keystrokes.

The picture of the shad at the start is not a very clear picture with the sun reflecting.
It looks like a lot of things to a lot of people.
