Cabin Question

    Gents,
This is the first winter with the cabin. We use it in the winter so this is the question I have for you. While not there should I be turning the electricity off to the well pump. I keep thinking I should be in case a pipe were to freeze and burst but I don’t know enough about wells to know if this will hurt the pump over time.
Any fellow cabin owners have knowledge on this?

Turn it off… it shouldn’t hurt it. It shouldn’t run when your not there anyways… the only way it will, is if you have a leak or a burst of some type.

You should be alright. I have my guys shut the water off in the shop when they leave for the weekends just in case……..

We always unplug our pump when we’re not at our cabin. Summer or winter.

We’ve always unplugged the pump and we soldered a small petcock in the pump room to drain all the pipes just to be safe.

That’s a great idea. We just bring it inside for the winter.

Thanks – I will just flip the breaker off and kill the electrictiy that runs the pump when not there. Thanks for the insight.

Absolutely turn it off! We do no matter what time of year. Can you imagine what would happen if a pipe froze or a connection simply broke while you werent there?

I put in a switch by the door. It controls the circuit to the furnace and water heater. Those are on a clean circuit in a sub-box. So when we leave we just flip the switch by the door. I use it year round…water damage doesn’t look any prettier when it is warm.
