Why the heck is the MN fishing opener a week later than usual this year? I thought it was always supposed to be the second Saturday of May. What’s up with it being on the third Saturday, two full weeks after Wisconsin’s opener? This blows!

Direct from the Mn DNR web-site:

Minnesota’s general fishing opener is the Saturday two weeks before Memorial Day weekend.

    Why? Three main reasons:

    1. It allows most walleyes to spawn before being caught by anglers
    2. It ensures that the opener is on a weekend, when most anglers can fish
    3. This date ensures two full weekends for anglers and businesses before the Memorial Day weekend.

The opener dates this year are BS. The state is taking a full week of fishing away from us MN anglers who already have short open water season to begin with.

If you have an issue you should take it up with the people that invented the calendar. Thats just how it works this year.

    Hey guys,

Although the inland walleye season seems a week off in my mind forget other fishing opportunities like Monster Rainy River Sturgeon or Rainy Lake Pike and Slab crappies. Some of my absolute favorite fishing doensn’t coincide with the the fishing opener as like you I’d lose sleep waiting to wet a line. Then you’ll be all loosened up when anglers get the first crack at opening day eyes wherever you prefer to chase them!!

    Pre Fishing opener fish from………..YESTERDAY!!
