Here is a quick report from the scout camp and Lake Caroline from over the weekend. Spent the weekend up there with my sons troop 992.
We ended up walking out on Lake Caroline on the east side near the creek. Started looking for crappies in the deeper water rite in front there with no luck. Kept drilling and working deep and shallow until we reached the deepest part on the north east end of the lake. Found some nice 10 to 12″ crappies here.
They where pretty scattered out in the deeper water and suspended about 20′ down. Once located with a lot of hole hopping it wasn’t to hard to convince them to hit. Nothing special on lures. Just my favorite diamond jigs with euro larvae and Ratsos.
It was great getting out on new water. There where only 2 spear houses set up on that end of the lake. Middle of the afternoon there where 2 portables that had set up near the center narrows but other than that it was all ours.
The creek leaving the lake was open. Guess the narrows are usually open to but had froze during the last cold snap. There where geese and swans wintering in the open creek. A bald eagle was hanging out in one of the trees near there. We also had a few deer running the hills and swamps around the lake. It was a very pleasant afternoon on the ice looking for fish and watching the wild life.
A added bonus to this weekend was getting to spend some time on the ice with a few scouts that had never ice fished or had been out very little. These kids seemed like they where soaking every bite of the experience from just loading the equipment into the sleds, venturing out on frozen ice, getting to run a power auger and figure out flashers and eventually locating and catching a few fish. As things go our youngest scout caught the biggest crappies at about 12″s. Talk about a happy camper.
I would have to imagine there must be a few on this site that have been up to this camp with there sons. This was my 1st time up there and was surprised at how nice it was. Lots of activities like sledding, skiing, climbing wall. There is even a high obstacle course perched 20′ off the ground. Guess I will add ice fishing to the list now as it was great getting out on Lake Caroline.
Hopefully we will back next winter to give this area a try again.
Lots of lake out that way. Anyone else been getting out?
