Was out tonight. Just before dark i started throwing a rebel popper into small calm holes (4-10ft dia.) in the slop looking for a bit of last min action. I had made it through a few holes catching some runts. I was movin fast down the edge from hole to hole looking for that one good smack to end the night. I came up on a spot that was no more than maybe 6 feet in dia. 15 or so yards from the deeper edge of the slop (snot thick) and in maybe 4ft of water at most. ‘Smack,’ i get a-bit better pop and start draggin’ it through the garabage. Turns out to be a 17 1/8″ eye. I was more than slightly bewildered. Growing up on a lake and being a bass man, i have caught my share of random walleyes (from 6″ers on 7″ power worms, to a 27″er between a dock and lift on a spinner bait). But this definately beats them all. Picture? who’d believe a popper in a walleyes mouth any ways. But it got me thinkin of the randoms that i have caught over the past year.
So no pic of the eye, but the first two are a bass i got pitchin’ jigs for eyes,’ not quite sure whats up with the blodges, but if you look close it has some cool perch orientated bars over the back. The last is a pic of a perch i got on hard water, which had one fully functional eye on one side and a flesh hole on the other side with just a tab of black. I’ve seen completely milked over eyes before (without any thing resembling a wound) but never an absences of eye before.

What have you guys randomly gotten’ before, Stories or Pics?? lets see some goofy

One of my favorite things about fishing is some of the odd things you see. Here are a couple of mine.

The catfish was caught rodeo style. Somehow he got tangled in the line. I doubt that the hook wasn’t set well and pulled out reeling in the fish and then he got lassoed, I am 95% sure he got caught up in the loop when nibbling at my bait.

The walleye like your perch had an eye missing that was completely healed. He was a decent fish and healthy, so it hasn’t hurt his health. It looked like a very old wound and was pretty clean in the socket. I’ve seen shrunken eyeballs from injuries, but never one completely healed as clean as this.

Lastly is the pike. His head not only looks a little big for his body, but it is angled down darn near 45 degrees. It wasn’t the way I was holding him, that was how it was shaped. I am not sure if the head being a little big for the body was from the mutation that caused his head to be angled or just that he can’t feed as effectively and it has stunted his growth.

I can’t wait to catch my next ‘odd’ fish.

How about Sauger on topwater and not just a couple. Only time ever happened to me anyways. Was bank fishing in Pool 16 many years ago when this happened. I thought it weird.

The weirdest shallow water walleye story was when I was casting a spinnerbait and it hit in about 6″ of water. I fish nailed it as soon as it entered the water and you guessed it, it was a walleye. There were rocks there, so it isn’t too crazy. It was also Moore lake, so that probably also explains why the fish was a little messed up in the head.

I was casting from shore on the Wisconsin River when about 25 ft in front of me a small channel cat popped up to the surface on its side and started comming right at me sideways. When it got to the shre right next to me a mink popped up from underneath holding it in its mouth and climbed out on shore about 5 ft away.

On the Red I caught a channel that had no eyes or even eye holes, it was just skin. He was almost totally black too.

Saw this on another site. Not my photo…

This steelhead got caught or swam into a dipsy diver ring somehow and then “grew up” around the ring. I guess guys have reported this happening more often than you might think…

Amazing and sorta disgusting all at the same time.

Not fishing, but outdoors. I shot a small buck in SD one year that had the top wire of a tomato cage around his head and one leg. He couldn’t run full out. To our surprise when the field dressing came around, he was “roped”.
