I am going to be working on Crane Lake this summer. The resort I will be working for says there are muskie in the lake that are coming from Little Vermilion Lake. Neither of the Lakes show muskie in the net surveys from the MN DNR, but i’m not going to question the guy who owns the resort as he is also a guide and knows what a muskie looks like! He sees several 50″ muskie come from Crane each year and has a friend who comes from Little Vermilion where the Muskie are apparently plentiful, to fish for them on Crane Lake.

Anyone else know of any other lakes containing Muskie up that way?

If ya run up Crane through Namakan, into Kab, you will see a portage into Shoepack on the north part of the lake, just west of the Ellsworth Rock Gardens. Get a key from the Natl. Park Service for one of the boats kept there and you can fish the famous shoepack strain of muskies until your arms fall off! Bring mosquito spray.

Shoepack is loaded with skis, but they are small. Still fun to catch though. I have been told that Crane has a few big muskies, but it is a low numbered lake for skis.

Muskies are extremely rare on these border lakes. My dad caught one on Kabby in 40 years. The Shoepack fish are small/stunted and you are lucky to catch one over 10-12lbs.

Maybe, but a buddy of mine connected with a 57″ fish that probably would have taken state record, but there was no certified scale.
It is a real fish and did end up on the wall.
They are there, but they are rare.
