Made it up nort this weekend for a little ice fishing on long lake near glen. Got on the ice friday night about 7pm and after drilling holes in 3 different areas found a few crappies. The crappies where on the north end of the big bay in 40 to 60′ of water. fish where coming threw 20 to 40′ down. Never did find any big groups of crappies but with a good amount of hole hopping was able to put a good meal of 10 to 13″ fish together. Shrimpo bodies on glow demon spoons took all the fish.
Looked for fish again on saturday during the day and drilled holes all over the bay with not a fish to be found. Came back a little before dark and found fish in every hole we drilled during the day. We hole hopped all over the bay taking just a few fish here and there. still no big numbers out of any one spot. Still plenty of good sized crappies to be caught.
Fishing crappies this deep was interesting. Getting jigs down to waiting fish took some time. 2 pound test was and the weight of the glow demon jig was a must. Any heaver line and it would take to long to get to the fish. Bobbers where out also. The fish where coming in at such different heights a bobber would of been a mess to try to make quick adjustments in depth. We also keep most fish that where caught mainly due to the depth of the fish. This was not a good place to play catch and release with these deep fish. I have seen before that crappies coming from this deep of water even if they swim back down threw the holes a fair amount of them will just float back up under the ice and die.

The day bite was dead on several lakes in the area this weekend. Morning and evening bites where going good. I was wondering if the sun light getting threw the ice now may have had something to do with the day bite turning off. A

Anyone else been fishing in the Aitkin area?

How shallow did you go during the day? My experience with crappies this time of year is right in the weeds. This increase in sunlight starts to make some changes in the weedy areas and the baitfish and gamefish are there.

I imagine then with low light, their back out to the deeps of the bay to roam. I would try the shallow weeds in less than 10′ of water.

We tryed one shallow area at about 10′. I was also wondering how the sun light was effecting the weeds. Was going to check them out better on sunday but never did make it out on the ice that day.
