Just curious as to how many of you Musky Hunters are using Bulldawgs on a regular basis? I have tossed them some, but I cannot get the confidence to stick with it for long? Any mods that might help the action?

I wouldn’t claim to be a serious Musky angler, but I work with a guy who is. He has several different sizes and colors of Bull dawgs in his arsenal and has a lot of success with them. He has one that he keeps gluing back together with melted rubber worms so it now has 27 different colors

He just lobs them out there and then “glides” them back to the boat. Last fall we were on Bald Eagle and he had a 42 inch fish nail a Dawg right at the side of the boat.

Put your thumb behind the top single hook and push down and pull up on the head of the bait giving it a slight upward bend. This will give the bait a different fall rate and it will jet to the side a bit. Not really a way to work a Dawg wrong but I’ve caught at least 95% of my fish being very aggressive with the bait…lot’s of pops and jerks while reeling it in at a pretty good clip. I’ve had a lot of follows using just a straight retrieve but the more erratic the better for me. Remember to upgrade the hooks and split rings on new ones.

We fish them all the time. Pull pause technique most of the time, or steady retrieve. Bob likes to touch some of ours up with marker, one in particular got some black verticle lines added to it and has been a really good color for us. We call it the Goonie bait, because Goonies never say die.

Nice. Goonies, I’ll ask for one over at Thorne Bros. and see what they say!!! Do you prefer a size at any given time of the year?

We mostly fish the 9″, especially on pressured waters.

I would stick to using the magnum size or even the pounder. I have caught all my muskies using the magnum, but I am going to start using the pounder in the fall, late october and november. You may want to buy a bigger rod for these bigger baits if you don’t already. The smaller bulldawgs have not worked for me, but that is probably more of a confidence issue more than anything. I would buy lots of different colors because the color can make all the difference in the world. Good luck.
