I enjoy fishing for fall bass, most of this has been done with spinnerbaits and different plastics. I have read reports from many of you talking about having good success fishing cranks. What can you recommend as far as prefered lure types, retrieve, location, etc, to someone like myself who knows nothing about fishing this fall cranks and bass. Seems like it would be big fun! Thanks ahead of time!

I like Shad raps, and I’ve had a lot of luck in the fall with orange colored baits. At least for me a big part of the formula is finding green weeeds. If you can find a good stand of weeds that are still green, sooner or later there will be fish cruising the edges. One nice thing about a crank bait is that you can find the edge and also see what the weeds look like when you start dreging them up. That’s something you can’t do with electronics!

It can be slow and then bang you’re hooked up witht eh best fish of the year. Good luck!

I’m sure you saw that i have been throwing cranks already this early in fall. Honestly, my favorite way to get ’em is like you mentioned: shallow with spinnerbaits and plastics. You can catch a lot of nice fish doing this. But i have a lot of success catching fat schoolers on crankbaits in the fall. My 2 absolute favorite baits are a no. 5 rapala jointed shad rap and a cotton cordel wally diver. I like throwing grey or silver colors but it seems like they will hit anything you throw, they are so agressive. i like to hit some of the shallow bass, and you can do well throwing topwaters even in the cold, but its really fun to crank um out of the deep. I’ve been having great success with big carolina rigged baits too, such as a 10 inch worm. But we haven’t seen anything yet on the river. Its only going to get better.

Traps! There is another bass guy I will leave name less that also love this fall patern. He may add to this later.

Key in on sand bars with grass and any green weeds you can find. The later you get into fall the faster you can burn them. This is also a great pattern to get the wife or kids into. The weed growth is coming down (Less work for you! ) and they can huck them a mile. (Fun for them!)

For deeper structure (8 to 10 ft) I run Spro traps. For the shallow bite I use any other. (Primarily Rapala.)

Have fun and let me know if you have any other questions.

My fall plan has always been match the hatch.Saying that I still almost always rip rattle baits first then move to more subtle baits if that don’t work.If you have shad on the lake you fish they seem to get that drab off white this time of year flat white lures seem to work for me I like to get out the lures that are almost ready for the trash bin they look so rough this time of year.Crawdad colors and oranges that looks like crawdads seem to do well to this time of year.Just spend some time on the water and you will figure out your local pattern.
