Enjoy thos cat fish up there. Flood wood is the catfish capital of MN. At least that is what it says on its water tower. Some of the first places I river fished where around flood wood.
Lots of channel cats up there. We used to fish between flood wood and brookston. There are train tracks that run onthe south side of the river. Find then and take the maintaince road. You will see several local spots where you can shore fish. Some of our best camps we just pulled over and made.Cut suckers worked real well in the spring up there. Right around fishng opener was the time we would really hit it. Make sure and tie those rods off to something. Those cats would hit like freight trains and if you where not right on your rod it would be gone.
Make sure and post some pictures from up there. Would love to see the area again.March 14, 2006 at 4:15 pm #429829I used to live in Floodwood(not proud of that). The mouth of the floodwood river could be an excellent place to fish.. if you didnt have half the town partying down there every night, and the house at the confluence lighting off the blackpowder cannon every time they get a fish(not a joke). The Savanah river just down the trail is a little bit better for cats.. but these places are really pressured and abused by the locals.. and I dont think a fish of any specie ever gets released.
If you have a boat that can run shallow, head upstream towards the whiteface river.. excellent fishing up there. Shore fishing can also be decent by the county road 8 access if you dont bleed to death in the blizzard of mosquitos.
Lots of places down the railroad tracks on the way to Brookston, and in Brookston by stony brook.. or all over that town can be pretty good.
Dont fish right in Floodwood unless you have to. If you do have a boat.. anywhere away from the people(river mouths) can be decent.
Keep your doors locked and your possessions close to you. They will steal everything in a heartbeat if you give them a chance.
March 14, 2006 at 6:34 pm #429878i am familiar with some of those “in town” people popular sites and havent had much luck there.. locals also told me to head up to the savannah river too.. thanks for the info ill try the cut suckers by the savannah..and post pics with any luck!
March 14, 2006 at 8:33 pm #429922Any intrest in heading back up that way fishing dave. I have 2 jon boats to use up there. Back in the day if we coudnt get sucks for bait we would just chop up a walleye. Worked just as well.
March 24, 2006 at 3:08 pm #432951I will probably make it up that way sometime this summer. The cat fishing really doesnt pick up until July up there. Much will depend on water levels.. That river will eat props in a hurry in low water conditions.
The hole just downstream of the *Rapids* on the St Louis can be good for cats along with walleyes. Other than that.. getting upstream past the campgrounds(not the campgrounds in town) and further up is the best bet.. the farther you get away from town, the better it is.
If you do head downstream, do not go through the rapids in low water.. odds are you wont make it back up.
