Just wondering if there are any IDAer’s who fly fish for carp?
I’m going to try it this summer, and any advice or pointers would be great.

    Thanks

    Ben,

I’ll go along! I’ve never fly fished for Carp but from what I’ve read it’s like catching Bonefish on the flats. Let me know if you find anything out.

Well, I haven’t done it for a number of years.

It’s easiest when they are feeding on the surface although they are spookier. Just sight fish to them with a dark color fly. I’ve had the best luck with a black nat in size 10 or 12. But I’ve used a timber wolf pattern black and gold too.

I’ve found pods on the croix (afton area) and followed them with the trolling motor. Problem with doing this is if your fly falls through the carp pod, many times a smallie will grab it…pesky little things!

It’s worth trying! My favorite carp/fly fishing experience was a day that started out as a bass fishing day. The lake that I was fishing had a shallow (1-2 feet) mud flat where a trout stream entered. On the flat, several pods of carp were feeding on the surface. Since I was bass fishing all I had were my bass flies…however, I did have a few adult dragonfly imitations. A soft cast within about two feet of a fish resulted in a very agressive attack followed by a 10 minute fight. There were even a few that missed the first time, turned around to find the fly, and gave it a second shot. I believe the biggest one was 23″, not big by carp standards, but still a blast!
Some guys on a pontoon boat saw me fighting one from a distance and came over to see what I was up to. They looked confused when they saw that I was actually fishing for carp. Too bad for them.
