Last weekend was our annual “Sunfish Classic and Euchre Extravaganza” concentrating on Orr, MN. area lakes. The strange spring weather definitely had an impact on what we found this year. The lakes that we usually target were very slow, with little to show for our efforts. It’s been our practice to stay mobile including a change of lake if necessary. We finally found a lake that was hot and the fun began. We found dozens of Bluegills in the 3/4 pound class stacked up in the shallows. The Crappies on this particular lake run fairly small, around 10 inches, so we played catch and release with them. The hot presentation believe it or not was a Beetle spin type spinner with a white tube skirt. Everything in the lake was climbing all over that spinner including the sunfish. It sure beat digging around in the worm bucket! Several bonus Bass were caught as we were running around looking for panfish. Finally, I have come to the conclusion that Walleyes are extinct. Once again we spent a full day fishing Walleyes and ended up catching Northerns and Rock Bass. I don’t think Walleyes really exist. The other presentation that worked well was a bead head nymph on the fly rod. Sunday was dedicated to teaching my friend’s 13 year old son Nick how to cast. He managed to work some line out and catch some sunfish. From the smile on his face I think Nick enjoyed the experience.
