Are they moving shallow at all yet or are you finding them over deep water?

We seem to think that because winter is over that the panfish quit biting bait on an ice fishing jig. Thats not true. Their food doesn’t grow huge in the nicer weather. Their mouths don’t grow bigger either. So those little jigs still work great so when you are shopping for small leadheads pick up some of those great ice fishing jigs too before the stores put them away til next winter.
Thanks, BillApril 14, 2005 at 2:40 am #356762Let me share a little story with you. A true story though. Years ago I was fishing a southern Minnesota lake, called Lake Tetonka, and had my youngest daughter and grandaughter in the boat with me and we were fish right next to a boat that had a couple older fisherman in it. I wanted to fish next to them because older retired fisherman seem to really know what they are doing. Especially guys who have fished these lakes all their lives. Well did I ever see something. Its a learning experience I will never forget. These guys were catching bluegills left and right. And we were catching nothing. No matter what we tried or how hard we tried we caught nothing. We were using the normal jigs and minnows and kept switching colors and jig sizes and still nothing. A very humbleing experience for sure. What these guys were using to haul in fish after fish was waxies on ice fishing jigs right in the middle of summer. What a lesson these guys taught me the hard way. And you can bet the first thing I did when I got off the water was to go buy some ice fishing jigs because naturally I didn’t have any with me. After all its summer and fish don’t bite ice fishing jigs then. Right? Wrong!!! So hopefully you too won’t be caught out on the water without your ice fishing jigs in the middle of summer and learn this lesson the hard way too.

April 14, 2005 at 8:59 pm #356943MDP, Do you use the crickets in the river or just lakes? Bill, thanks for sharing the information, there is another guy down here that says he uses ice jigs to and does very well on them during the summer. I will have to try it. I usually just stick with a gold hook and a minnow here on the river (pool 13). Thanks Rick,
