Was talking with my dad and He was wondering if We had anyone who fishes Superior for salmon. He has fished Lake Michigan for about 25 years or so and has fished Superior here and there. He was wondering if the baits and equipment were the same as it is on lake Michigan. If you have time to post up please do I will pass it on and will try to get him Signed up here for IDA in the next few days.

    Thanks Adam

I have co-worker, who says he has fished it many, many times but, I don’t know much about it, but I would expect to to be very similar to michigan, I’m trying to find a time to go out and fish it with him. He fished up by ashland the one thing I do know is he uses like 200 yards of line easy when he’s fishing out there, he says it makes a huge difference.

I used to live on the north shore as a kid. During the mid to late 80’s the salmon fishing was unbelievable(lot’s of 20lb.+ Chinook). I know the populations now are way lower than they used to be so you might want to do a little research. As far as the technique, it’s the same for the most part although water temps are a little more crucial.

I have fished from Knife River down to the French, and have used my walleye trolling rods and boards. The salmon (Silvers or Coho) usually hang around the mouths of the rivers, and shorelines as do the Loopers or Kamloops Rainsbows. Jointed Rapalas in orange and silver/black have long been a favorite of mine. I line them out about 200-300 feet. I guess I do not know how that compares to Michigan.

This will be my 3rd year fishing the big lake. By no means makes me a expert on the lake, but I really enjoy it alot. I fish it every weekend druing the summer that I can. I have only fished lake Michigan one time, but sure same fishing lures, speeds, etc are the same. Temp. is probably only thing really different between the two lakes, being the lake Superior doesnt get as warm as Michigan. I have fished Superior from the harbor to Two Harbors and done good both places. Depending on which way wind is from tells me where to fish that day. By the port of Superior you can catch cocho, walleye, lake trout, right by the breaker way in the spring, later in year go out from there about 10 miles look for the mud line and we catch nice lakers there too. Two Harbors we have caught laker and coho from just surface fishing to downriggering, again depending on temps. So I would tell him its very much the same as fishing lake Michigan, might not be as big of fish just becasue water temps cooler, but sure is closer!! Good luck
