Classes will be done the first week of may and the girlfriend and I would like to take a trip to a resort. We would like to go somewhere in MN where we can get a little cabin on a good bass or pike fishing lake. Just wondering if you guys had any suggestions. I have a 17′ Nitro bass boat so I probably shoudn’t be on any huge lakes so keep that in mind. Thanks

Check out the Park Rapids area. If you are bring your girlfriend with there is a lot to do and there are TONS of lakes in the area. Plus, you would only be 30 minutes from Walker in case she likes to shop or do the casino thing. Park Rapids is one of the nicest areas in the state I think.

February 1, 2005 at 3:33 am #339931It wouldn’t do much good to look for a good Bass lake in the first week of May, not many gamefish are legal to fish for before the season opens… So how about a good Walleye and Pike lake?
I think a young couple could have a really great time up at Kettle Falls on Rainy Lake. It is an historic site with lots of great fishing opportunities. You can either rent a villa or stay in the hotel and guides are available. You actually fish in Canada & Minnesota so you would need to spend about $30 extra to get a couple of week long Canada angling licenses. Pitch husky jerks along the rocky shores, sweep…pause, sweep…pause, BAM! 4# Walleye, 8# Pike, 3# Smallmouth just about guaranteed that time of year. Another choice to search for fish is to pitch gold 3/4 or 1 oz rattle traps. There are also some great jigging/lindy rigging opportunities.
That is what I would do… Kettle Falls!
February 1, 2005 at 4:11 am #339943Thanks guys. Yeah I wasn’t thinking when I said bass because you are right it won’t be open season. Kettle Falls sounds like a place to check out. Thanks again.

I would have to agree with Scott with the Park Rapids area. This will be the location of my retirement someday. We have been fishing the area between PR and DL for the last 13 years or so around Mn opener. The amount of water and lack of pressure on some of these smaller lakes is unbelievable. Many Point lake is just one of many lakes that we hit during this period. Opener 3 years ago, there was only one other rig at the landing the entire weekend. We boated plenty of walleyes/crappies and even got into some SUMO pre-spawn (pre-season) LMB….sssshhhh!
Honestly though, the scenery is awesome and plenty of water to jump around to. Classic walleye/pike/bass lakes here!
Good luck!

I second that Kettle Falls Hotel trip !!! That place ROCKS !!!
Endless nooks and cranys to fish…some Monster Pike hold right below the docks at kettle falls..out where the lake opens up from the river is a good spot for walleyes too…It is one of a few places you can stand on a deck and look south into Canada…
Treat yourself to a hotel room and sit at the huge family table for breakfast, lunch and supper….It’s a trip you will never forget !!
February 10, 2005 at 2:52 am #342122I like the crow wing chain in that area “park rapids” I really like #8 for walleye and Bass any of you guy’s from the area fish the crow wing chain…?
February 10, 2005 at 4:27 pm #342251My Grandma is on 3rd Crow and I have fished it since I have held a rod. Not frequently, but 4-5 days a year.
My uncle is now on Potato and he wants to start fishing that a little more. It looks like and interesting lake.
