Grand Rapids, Minn. — The Minnesota DNR has scheduled two public informational open house meetings to gather input on walleye regulation proposals for 10 lakes in Itasca County. Lakes being considered include Swan, Trout (near Coleraine), Splithand, Moose, Island (near Northome), Bowstring, Sand, Jessie, Round (near Squaw Lake), and Deer/Battle/Pickerel (near Effie). The proposed regulation on each lake is a 17-inch to 26-inch protected slot with one walleye longer than 26 inches in possession.
The first open house will be held Monday, Sept. 20, from 7-9 p.m. at the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center in Grand Rapids. The second will be held Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 7-9 p.m. at the Squaw Lake Community Center. An additional meeting will be held at DNR headquarters in St. Paul, on Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Comments also may be sent to Chris Kavanaugh at DNR Area Fisheries Office, 1201 E. I fish Sand Lake in Itaska cty. every year. The average size of Walleye is around 13″. It probably wouldn’t hurt anything to apply a slot limit. Perhaps it will bring the size of the fish up a bit. The only bad part of putting a slot in place is that it seems they never lift it after that.
