Weird spring. In the last week I’ve caught a walleye, channel cat, white bass, smallmouth bass, northern, sheephead, buffalo carp, crappie, and seen a largemouth come out… Every single one of which had eggs. I have never seen so many species spawning at the same time? Any thoughts? Fishing tips, forecast, or comments?

Fish can hold eggs for months prior to spawn, just because you see eggs doesnt mean they are in spawn yet, crappies wont spawn until minimum of 55 degree water. I’ve seen walleyes in January full of eggs.

Female fish of many species start producing eggs in the fall and they continue to develop for months in advance of the spawn. You must not clean many fish caught ice fishing? You see eggs in cleaned fish all the time in winter and even fall. The eggs don’t just magically appear and then all of sudden are layed lol! It takes months.

LOL… Ozzyky, it doesn’t work that way. Time to go back and ask your mom about that!

Mainly catch and release for me. Thanks for the info. I had no idea. I’ve never gotten into so many big females in a week with no males.

I also try hard to release anything I suspect has eggs. IMO all fish with eggs should be released and if someone’s caught with one they should pay a small fine like a parking ticket.

Easily the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read on this site!

Evan, I don’t think it is a crazy idea. After all we limit hunting or don’t allow the hunting of many female game. Personally, I applaud your actions.

However I must disclose that I do find fish eggs delicious, but I also do not keep many fish. I’m mostly C&R.

Evan, I’m sure you have the best interest of the species in mind…but harvest limits include taking of females with or without eggs.

I’ve asked this question before when folks have complained about taking females during their spawn… What’s the difference if I take a female now (full of eggs) or next November when they are starting to make babies for the following year?

    Answer: 1 spawn

So that would mean people would need to know the difference between a male and a female right?

There are hunters that can’t tell the difference between a female mallard and a teal. LOL Well, that might be a little extreme but you see where I’m going with this.

If it came down to releasing all females, the fishery is in tuff shape and should be closed down to all angling.

I did not think about that. I was on the train of thought believing more females = more fish. Having no males in the river wouldn’t help the populations one bit.

You never know, one of those female walleye’s might have a few super eggs in her that might produce the next state record. Far fetched? Maybe, but you never know.

More females equals more fish….I would direct you to the Mille lacs forum.

I also like to catch big fish and most big walleyes are females so there’s another reason.
