While paging through an old NAFC book entitled “Walleye Secrets” I saw this chart of fish caught and released in MN circa 1990s. I have never heard this lake mentioned on here so I looked up where it was. Do any of you guys fish this lake or is there a reason not to? Just a random curiosity today.

Huge lake, 25hp limit, lots of rocks to navigate.

Wow I would imagine the 25 hp limit really reduces the number of people fishing it!

Used to fish it as a kid. Haven’t been up in years. Unbelievable fishery. Trophy potential for pretty much every species that swims those waters.

Haven’t fished it in a few years but my friend in GM does 3-6 times a year, depending the bite there and around the area. Even though it’s in the BWCA and has the HP limit, it can get a fair amount of traffic – there are cabins on the ON side that are much faster/easier to access via boat vs driving plus it’s a popular BWCA entry point so the outfitters run lots of canoe shuttles to American Point and back. It’s not a true BWCA experience but it’s a beautiful lake and fun to be on.

Great lake for smallies, both for numbers and trophy fish, can be very good for lake trout depending on the time of year. Walleye numbers have been down for at least 10-15 years but it is one lake that you can get a true trophy out of – local guides routinely get several 30″+ fish out of the lake every spring. One of these years I’ll get up there in the winter to camp and/or chase trout and whitefish.

There aren’t many lake maps period, let alone good ones so it can be tough to navigate the first few times. Some very nice campsites if you know where to look. Hope this helps, good luck.

Not to mention it’s the home of the MN state walleye record (via Seagull River). If I remember correctly it was opening weekend of the 1979 season. I have also heard the walleye fishing has been in decline.

This rare mostly mike berg and his guides. Fish many times with him. He is a great guide a bit pricy. My dad was his best customer for 30 years we made his sign that now hangs above his garage. Also he uses a few rods my dad made. It is a tough lake to fish on your own. It will take years for a guy to get fish like mike put up each year.

Used to fish the Seagull River when it opened (usually Memorial weekend) and had great fishing until 7 or 8 yrs ago…Seemed like the Walleye fishing got poorer every yr.

We did have some great trips and caught alot of nice eater size Walleyes when it was good. We used to camp up there and fish right at midnight when the Seagull river opened.

There is still some awesome walleye fishing to be had on Saganaga, if you happen to know exactly where to go! And it so happen’s that I know exactly where to go! My introduction to Saganaga(SAG) occured when I was but a callow youth of only 20 year’s. My all-time, favorite, super-secret, walleye fishing honey-hole is located there! I doubt that anyone has fished it since the last time I was up there 5 year’s ago! I’m 76 year’s old now and in good health! On my Bucket List, #1 is making one last trip up to the BWCA! Anybody interested in joining me? At my age, a solo trip is out of the question! If interested I can be reached at: http://[email protected] DIRTBALL2
