Mono or Braid?

I am wondering what people prefer on their rods that they use to pull planer boards with. I have always used braided line but the boards always slide off the clips unless you wrap them. I know if you use mono it still has the tendency to slip off but seems to hold better. I like braided because there isn’t any stretch and you can feel every move your crank bait is making. Looking to re-spool my rods and am wondering if it’s something I should switch to?

Strictly braid on planer board rods. I change out the releases that come with the boards and replace them with OR16 snap weight releases. They have the pin in the center of the pad so the board doesn’t fall off. I also wrap the front release. Once you get the hang of it it only takes about 3 seconds to put a board on and less to take it off.

Yea, I picked up some of these OR16 clips thinking they would work better. Thanks for confirming that before I put them to work.

I’m also a big fan of using the OR-18 releases.

I’ve been using braid on my planer boards for over 13 years. The biggest advantage is that you don’t have to put out as much line compared to mono – less down time and easier on the fish. Another advantage is that you can detect debris on your line (without the planer board attached) without having to reel your crankbait all the way in – less down time.

Small disadvantage with braid is since there’s no stretch, it’s extremely important to keep those drags loose as possible when trolling otherwise you will rip hooks right out of the walleye’s mouth. It’s also important to adjust that drag and back off a little once you take the planer board off. All you are trying to do is apply constant pressure while gaining on the fish. Some guys tie on a fluorocarbon leader which will give them a little stretch which helps when fighting a bigger fish.

I like braid for the same reason it has no strecth but a dow
nside is the visibility of it in the water but it is generally stronger than mono
