What are your thoughts on this motor? Is it known to be full of problems or is out a quality motor? Is the 2 stroke oil that needs to be used expensive. I have only owned 4 strokes so not sure about how these motors are. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Is it new or used, if used how many hours, what year, give us some particulars to go on. Whether something like two stroke oil is expensive is relative to what you want out of a motor. I, myself would rather “over buy” . The extra cost is soon minimized. Whereas under performance is realized every time you come up short. Either way this looks like a big investment, get what you really want.

I had a 2001 HPDI V-max and ran it for 10 years and not one issue. I ran Amzoil. Great motor.

Overall a GREAT motor. There is a reason it is still around. No known issues that seem to come up over and over by anymeans. If its a new motor I would not hesitate to buy one what so ever. If its used, as with anything used get it checked out and look it over good.

As for the oil, its not cheap but isnt as expensive as some of the other brands of oil. Right now we are selling bulk 2m for $25 a gal.

Yamaha recommends the use of Ring Free with each fill up which can get rather spendy on top of their oil. Not sure how many guys actually run the stuff, but it is a recommendation. I believe the main issue with HPDIs is injector failure and they’re expensive to replace, but you can and should send them off to get cleaned and calibrated. If you’re buying a used motor, that’s the first thing I’d do and it should be part of your regular maintenance. They’re fairly easily removed and Brucato down south somewhere is one of a couple places that clean and calibrate. Besides that, good motors. Not super great on fuel though.

I ran a number of the HPDI motors over the years. Most were 175 HP with a 200 or two thrown in the mix. They were all fantastic, easy to start even in the cold, ran strong and were very reliable. I’d run one again without hesitation.

Has Yamaha ever made such a motor? I’ve never heard of a bad model yet…

I’ve one since June of 2000, it’s 2001 model on my 1950 Tyee Magnum and never an issue, not 1, for the last 8 years I’ve been using Walmart’s Super Tech oil, it was $6 when I started using on the recommendation of a friend who is a FLW Pro now it’s about $12 and it works great. Still never a problem.

I repowered with one. A 2006 200 hpdi. Mine is the 3.1l not the 2.?. The smaller ones had the grey top and the bigger ones like mine are all blue.

I bought it with 210hours for $7500 and now have 350hours only thing wrong is I’m getting a false high temp code which I found a bad sensor.

Be prepared to get a funny look at the dealer when you bring it in or want parts. So far it has been a challenge since they all give me the we only sell 4 strokes? WTF

Motor runs great but you need to keep up with fuel filters. The high pressure filter is around $90 and has a 100hour life the others are cheep
Mine is not to bad on the oil usage but it can drink the gas when ran wide open but what won’t.

Cheapest oil I found around the town is $31 a jug

So what you’re saying the replacement parts for this motor are hard to come by? I see this as hard to believe. They just discontinued this motor. They should still have a plentiful amount of parts for this motor.

It seems in my area they have parts readily available for the 4 stroke motors but they can get the parts in a day or so. I do my own work on the motor so I’m not to patient when they say we have to order the part in. You will not know that if you take it in to get worked on since you will more than likely get called when it is fixed and you never get told they have to order the part in.

The parts seem to come from millwakee so it only takes a day.

Most dealers have the impeller but not the whole kit and the filters should be in stock also along with the plugs. But some of the sensors and seals will not be stocked.
