Got invited to go up and fish Snowbank next week. Staying at Smitty’s. Anybody ever been out there? Group I am headed up with targets walleyes mainly, but I will likely give the Lakers a try too. My question is, for thw BWCA side, if I trim my 225 all the way out of the water and putt in using the T8, is that legal?

Hey Dan.. if i remember right snowbank is part in the BWCA and part is not.. you can load with the t-8 as long as you are putting in out of the BWCA>> soon as you cross that line though>>>

Dan, you CANNOT use a gas motor on the BWCA side of the line period. I always thought that was dumb to have the line in the middle of the lake. We used to use the gas ice auger right up to the line. Now who can tell me the gas spillage, fumes and noise don’t cross that magic line?
Trolling motor should be legal though. Smitty’s is a great place. They should be able to answer all those questions for you.
June 6, 2012 at 10:34 pm #1074288I’ve been up at Snowbank quite a few times. As far as I know you can still use a 25 hp north of the BWCA line unless something changed in 2012. We were just up there last fall while the big fire was burning and got to see the water tankers filling up on the lake. Smitty’s is below the 25 hp line so you are ok there for sure. You should be hitting it at a good time. We used to go up on Father’s Day week and walleye fishing was great. My brother in law is going up Saturday for a week so I’m intereseted in how you both do this year. Put up a report when you get back and let us know how you did.
I found this website that may help: 25 hp regulations
June 7, 2012 at 2:58 am #1074350I just rteturned from Ely yesterday. On Fall Lake, White Iron and Basswood lake I found hungry walleyes in the flowing water. Heavy rains have made the water run.
June 7, 2012 at 4:01 am #1074362Although I’m not too familiar about the BWCA side of Snowbank, I can tell you that Smitty’s is a great place to stay.
I spent most opening weekends of my childhood at this resort and some of my most memorable fishing trips have come from this resort. Ron and Denny are fantastic hosts and run a quality northwoods retreat.
I hope to fit this trip into my schedule soon because I truly miss that place.
Enjoy!
June 14, 2012 at 7:45 pm #1076091Got back last night from Snowbank. Roller coaster weatherwise with 90’s on Saturday and Sunday, and by Tuesday morning down in the 40’s. My first experience up there was a tough one. The group I was with bobber fished almost exclusively, something I don’t do too often. Trying to get a feel for the lake my boat pulled snells and spinners, pitched jigs and plastics, even pulled cranks. Other than one walleye, one pike, and a ton of hand sized smallmouth we got our azzes handed to us. I finally had to give in and soak a float. It paid off, in one fish, a deep goldie stretching tape at 28″. I never caught another walleye the rest of the trip. We did also manage some lakers trolling, with the longest being a hair under 30″. Those all came on DD Taildancers run 225 – 250 on the counters, most of the fish and bait we marked were at 40′. No pics of the lakers, but they were very pretty fish.
