I’m planning a “family fishing trip” for early September. I have plenty of real fishing trips planned with the guys….this is different.

I have a 2 & 4 yr old who can’t spend all day in a boat. I need a really nice place to stay so my wife will be happy. As of right now I’m down to Rainy, Mille lacs, or Door County in Wi. I’ve spent a week in Rainy and it was awesome, but my little ones got a little bored. I’ve spent time on Mille lacs, but only during the winter so I don’t know what it’s like in the summer. A few weekends spent in Door County with hit or miss fishing success.

Any insight…Fishing is important for this trip, but it’s not the only aspect(Did I really just type that?

Just tossing out a different option for you. Look into 4 seasons resort on winnibigoshish. Great family resort on a great fishing lake.

sun set cove on cass lake would be great for the family, the fishing is great with access to many lakes via the mississippi river and other small channels without ever taking boat out of the water. they have their own landing, marina and docks in front of all of there cabins. they have a beach and an indoor swimming pool. i have stayed at many resorts and this one would be my #1 choice for the family/ fishing. one other place would be the detroit lakes area there are many resorts in the area we stay at rush lake resort they have a beach basketball court and shuffle board for the kids and the fishing in the area is awsome but you may have to trailer your boat to other lakes if rush is not producing and you are only 5 min from ottertail one of mn best walleye and perch factories. i dont recomend milacs i dont even bring my FW there the weather can make the lake very unpleasant and there are very very few activities for the family and im not sure if there is even a beach for the kids to swim at on the lake. rainy lake house boat would be cool i think but havnt tried it myself. good luck!

Depending on how easily your wife gets bored, too, I can recommend the Great Alma Fishing Float. Check out their website. The float is a great place for antsy kids–they can catch tons of sunfish, while you and the Mrs fish beside them for bass, northerns, catfish, or walleye— and you any be surprised by what you catch. ( I have seen 13 different species caught in a the same day. ) Wabasha is close, Winona is close….both offer a good variety of touristy things. And Nelson, WI has the best ice cream cones for the kids(and big kids) at the Cheese Factory. If you want to cruise in your bat, the backwaters between Wabasha & Nelson offer great fishing, too. Or you can hit the main channel, or go upriver to Lake Pepin. Red wing is just a bit further. Just my idea of a good time.

Craguns on gull lake. They have all kinds of activities for kids, really good fishing, golf, zorbaz for pizza, and if you want you can drive over to Mille Lacs to fish. Craguns has a beach and indoor pool, and often run specials. Pm me if you want a couple of other nearby lakes for good fishing if you go. Pat

If you’re looking for a family trip and will have kids in the boat that may get bored, I wouldn’t plan anything to a big water. Tons of small water out there that won’t require your kids to take a pounding in 3-4ft rollers.
Grand Rapids MN area has tons of great eye lakes and ain’t too shabby when looking for bulls and slabs either.

Alot of nice resorts in the DL area as well as park rapids, these areas have plenty of lakes full of sunfish, and you can catch them all day. Sure to keep the kids happy and interested.

With family I think of places near fun towns.
    Leech has Walker.
Vermilion lake has Cook and Tower.

I can recommend Pehrsons Lodge on Vermilion. I stayed there twice. Very family oriented. Rare sand beach and protected areas for you boat.
