Just got off the phone with local CO on clarification for a regulation on page 9 under Angling Methods.
“Anglers may use only one hook. An artificial lure is considered one hook. A treble hook, when not part of an artificial lure, is considered three hooks and is not legal. The exception is that three artificial flies may be used when angling for trout, crappie, sunfish and rock bass.”
My question was what constitutes a “fly”. The question according to our local CO went out statewide to all CO’s and to the legal dept of the DNR. And the answer was that “Yes you can fish for the above stated species with up to three flies with no “0” restrictions as to how far apart one fly can be from another fly. Must have some sort of artificial lure and not bare hook or bare treble hook. There is no definition of what constitutes a “fly” with the DNR. I asked ” so as long as I have an artificial lure and have 3 or less on one line while fishing for the above stated species am I legal? The answer was yes.
This clears up a bet that I had with one of my fishing buddies …. I lost $10:)
