This last weekend my daughter Sharon, her husband Billy, and I spent a rainy weekend chasing big Crappies and hoping to find some big Bluegills as well.

First let me again express my thanks to everyone for the thoughts and prayers for Billy. Last fall he found he was dealing with cancer again and spent the winter going through more Chemo. He did very well and is clean and healthy once again. It was wonderful having our Billy back in the boat once again!

I was surprised to see the water temps were 66 when we got on the lake last Friday. The cloudy rainy weather dropped surface temps a little over the weekend. It was also very windy which made boat control and presentation a little challenging at times! The panfish were done spawning and had already started to scatter. You’d find a few here, a few there. We never found any spot where you could sit in one spot and pound on them. So we kept moving and found plenty of action. Presentation was simple, a small jig under a bobber. I was using my 4 weight flyrod and throwing small streamers. If anything it seemed that brightly colored jigs worked better than darker colors. Chartreuse, Yellow, white all produced. We found quite a few Crappies in the 12-14 inch range with a couple reaching 15 inches.

I’m looking forward to a day on the water when I’m NOT getting rained on.

Way to go, Steve, Billy, and Sharon,
Nice trip and nice Crappies. Surprized the temps were that warm.

On a fly rod to boot!!

Chris this actually is a very efficient and effective way to pursue panfish when they’re shallow. A small weighted streamer is basically a small jig, and you can drop it into small places accurately with little splash (so you’re not going to spook them). The fly rod I was using was a little light because of the wind but it worked very well for getting those big slab Crappies to the boat. A 6 weight might have been a little easier to cast with but I’m really enamored with my little 4 weight.

If any of your customers ever ask about this, I was using weighted Woolly Buggers tied on #8 and #10 2X long hooks. Bright “Crappie Colors” with a brass bead head for a little weight. A slow retrieve near the bottom was bringing the most hits. Great fun!

8# walleyes are easy. Sure wish I could find some 14 to 15″ crappies. Looks like another great trip. Glad to hear the son in law is feeling better.

We had a great time Dad! Even with all the rain and my soaked feet that was one of the greatest weekends we’ve had in a long time. I already went to Fleet Farm and picked up pair of knee high rubber boots like yours. We love you!
