Being 23 years old I would not expect him to taper off. He’s seeing more playing time than ever, being out in key and has produced in every way. Barring an injury or some kind of attitude problem. According to those in the know this team has issues with the latter.

They alluded to that in the broadcast last night that he can be a bit of a head case. Apparently him and coach Eveson knocked heads pretty hard at Milwaukee with the AHL when they were both there. Apparently that was a concern when Eveson became coach here. But word is Fiala has matured. Lets hope! Other thing is he is a UFA in the 2021/22 season. If he plays like this up to that point can we hang on to him?

BG needs to treat it as a top priority.

He’ll still be a RFA, so we have control over his next contract, he isn’t going anywhere unless offer-sheeted and then we get compensation back if we CHOOSE to not match…

The Wild will have 42M in Cap space (current cap number) but will have a lot of roster spots to fill. Fiala, Hartman, Ek, Donato, Brodin, Pateryn, Dubnyk and Hunt. I would guess that some of those would get done sooner and others will no longer be with the team. It is so much fun to watch this team right now and Fiala is driving so much offense and whenever he touches the puck you watch because he makes something happen so often.

Are you sure Joe? According to the Wild contract chart he is listed as a UFA? Unless I’m missing something?
March 4, 2020 at 9:42 am #1919982Brodin will get a new long-term deal done likely this summer after Dumba gets dealt, I just hope it’s not a crazy number because he doesn’t contribute that much offense to justify the big bucks..if they can sign him to around a 7-8 year deal for $42 million that would be nice. I think that term is pretty safe with him being only 26 yrs old…
Fiala will likely get a long term deal maybe mid next year if he keeps this pace up, BillyG will likely want to see it carryover into next season before committing. Ek will likely sign another short term bridge deal hoping his offense picks up, Donato won’t have a top 6 wing slot to play in so he might be more valuable to be traded. Hunt, Dubnyk and Pateryn won’t get resigned, we have prospects who will take their place.

I trust capfriendly – https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/wild
UFA Rule – A player becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) if their current contract ends after either 7 Accrued Seasons or they are 27 or older as of June 30. An Accrued Season is defined as a year in which a skater is on an NHL roster for at least 40 games (30 games for Goalies).

CapFriendly shows Fiala as an RFA.
March 4, 2020 at 9:53 am #1919987What’s really crazy & scary is to think 2 years down the road and the contracts Fiala and Kaprizov will likely command will have to mesh with Spurgeon, Parise, Suter and likely Brodin’s huge deals still on the books…We’ll be like the Leafs & Blackhawks with 5-6 players taking 50% of the team’s total cap space…That’s why drafting is so much more important in today’s NHL vs 10 years ago when you could put teams together almost entirely through Free Agency…Your star players command so much more of the cap space that you need good young (and cheap) players to adequately fill the roster voids to win…That’s why you see such peaks and valleys with franchises, they mortgage their future to try and win in their short windows…
This is pretty much a problem for all franchises, the big difference is if your star players (Crosby/Malkin/Fleury/Kessel, Kane/Toews/Crawford/Keith, Ovi/Backstrom/Kuznetsov/Holtby, Tarasenko/Reilly/Peterangelo) are capable of leading their team to a cup or not…Those examples shown did…
March 4, 2020 at 10:27 am #1920000Caps play the Flyers tonight on NBCSN if you need you’re hockey fix. Should be a good game. And maybe the best hockey of all starts this morning the high school boys kick off the tourney!!
I intend to watch both of these.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 22310March 4, 2020 at 10:32 am #1920001Excited for the state boys tourney. Hope my buddy’s kids team (Andover) can have a big tourney or he will be getting a lot of flak from his younger sister who just won a state title for Andover 2 weeks ago.
I dont get to see him play often, but he is the top ranked MN draft eligible player by NHL Central Scouting. He will likely get drafted this Spring in Montreal. Fun to see how it ends up and where he gets selected.Ice CapPosts: 2151March 4, 2020 at 10:35 am #1920002We might be getting a little ahead of ourselves on Fiala. Yeah he’s lighting it up in a exciting way and it’s something wild fans have been starving for so long it’s pretty easy to jump the gun and start speculating what he’s going to be worth in a couple years. He’s starting to get a lot of attention around the league so that means he’s getting a lot of attention from opposing coaches. It takes a little while for opposing game plans to catch up to a hot player and sometimes you can only do so much if they are just that good. I think it’s going to take the rest of this season and at least half of next to see what we really have in him.
He could be streaky, brilliant for 10 games than 8 points in the next 20. Maybe he turns out be injury prone. Maybe he’s the next Crosby? But right now it’s fun to watch that’s for sure!
March 4, 2020 at 10:54 am #1920012I heard Fiala and Eveson have almost a father son relationship. Russo was talking about that yesterday as well and how much Eveson has helped him this season.

I wouldn’t count out Eveson remaining as coach. Especially if the Wild make the playoffs and make a decent show of it. He’d be a cheap alternative to some of the big names out there and if the boys play hard for him why not?
I think Sandelin is happy where he’s at and signed a 3 or 4 year deal with UMD a couple years ago after he didn’t get the job with the Ducks if I remember right.tswobodaPosts: 8391March 4, 2020 at 12:59 pm #1920052I think Sandelin is happy where he’s at and signed a 3 or 4 year deal with UMD a couple years ago after he didn’t get the job with the Ducks if I remember right.
If the offer were there, I can’t imagine Sandelin would say no to adding another comma to his salary and working at the pinnacle of his occupation. The reality is college coaches rarely find success in the NHL so I doubt he gets an offer.
It think it will take winning at least 1 playoff round to get Evason a real chance at taking over next year.
March 4, 2020 at 2:55 pm #1920101he’s not staying, he was Fenton’s guy…BillyG likely already negotiating with his coach of choice to be announced after the season is over…

Don’t you DARE try and ruin this for me!
March 4, 2020 at 3:08 pm #1920107I would really hope BG doesn’t just hand out a head coach contract based simply on short term success.

Haha! I agree, we haven’t had this much hope for an offensively gifted player since year friggin 1 with Gabby and to think we might get another one as soon as his KHL year is done with…They both have the get you out of your seat skillset, Fiala has shown he can do it in the NHL, Kaprizov not yet other than the Olympics…

I know! And when Dumba gets traded for Nylander this offseason/draft/whenever we are going to have the 3 most dynamic players ever to suit up for the team on ONE LINE! Is it too early to buy season tickets for next year?
Gaborik (is slovak for groin made of glass) would get you out of your seat, but man, he was always hurt. Part of it I think was he didnt particularly care playing for Lemaire and just took a lot of maintenance weeks. LOLMarch 4, 2020 at 4:37 pm #1920145Gaborik (is slovak for groin made of glass)
Oh man, that one got me going…….

He’s looked this good since about early December from what I remember. I think that’s when I admitted I was wrong about him. At that time he wasn’t scoring as much but he was commanding the play o. The ice. Opposing teams and his own teammates were having trouble keeping up. Not much has changed in my opinion. He’s only gotten better.
Ice CapPosts: 2151March 4, 2020 at 6:00 pm #1920170I’m not trying to harsh the Fiala buzz guys I’m enjoying it as much as anyone. I’m just trying to be cautiously optomistic.
March 4, 2020 at 6:50 pm #1920187The Fiala hype isn’t new…he was dynamic his first full year in Nashville and then he had the terrible broken leg and its taken him almost 2 years to get back to normal. The Predators thought the world of him but then let him go as they must have thought he wouldn’t get over the injury…
March 5, 2020 at 1:26 pm #1920361he’s not staying, he was Fenton’s guy…BillyG likely already negotiating with his coach of choice to be announced after the season is over…
I think you’re right. I can’t see any GM firing a coach at such an awkward time unless The Heir Apparent was already in the bag and just pending an announcement.
I think Gurin wants to do the typical thing and get all of the old GMs guys out and all of his guys in.
I would have to hope that the exception is Darby Hendricks. We need him to keep doing exactly what he is doing.
Grouse
March 5, 2020 at 1:44 pm #1920368The NHL salary cap is expected to go up anywhere between 2-8 million next year, everytime this happens it makes the cap hits for Parise and Suter hurt just a little less
The current NHL TV deal expires next year and the rate that sports franchise values and advertising is growing the next deal will likely increase league revenue quite a bit raising the cap more each year and thus increasing new player contracts higher and higher…it might make sense to get ahead of it and sign some of our young guys longer term if possible..
